Jerry Calliste Jr. (born Gerald C. Calliste Jr., November 26, 1965–, Bronx, New York) is a American entrepreneur, music industry executive producer, songwriter, record producer, music publisher and former DJ who is best known for the internationally renowned, seminal 1983 hip hop, electro-funk and dance music classic recording “Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)". In 1983, Calliste Jr. a Muslim recorded under the name Hashim . Calliste Jr., 16, used a $50.00 Casio keyboard (combo calculator) to teach himself how to play keyboards by ear . Then one year later he went on to write and produce, Al-Naafiysh (The Soul) "one of the greatest Electro tracks ever..." , that during the early 80's "made it to #43 in the Billboards Dance Disco Charts" and to this day "parts of Al-Naafiysh (The Soul) have been sampled over and over again" . Also at 16 years old Calliste Jr. got his start at Tommy Boy Records when a DJ by the name of Harold McGuire professionally known as Whiz Kid introduced Calliste Jr. to then Tommy Boy Records Vice President Monica Lynch . Since 2001 Calliste Jr. is president and CEO of Bassmint Music and Caldella Music an online independent record label and music publishing company respectively. He also attends the Ross School of Management & Leadership at Franklin University where he is a double major Bachelor of Science I.T. and Bachelor of Science M.I.S student.

Kellman (2007) states, "Hashim was the work of Jerry Calliste Jr. He became involved with music as a teenager; he was DJ'ing at the age of 12, and in the early '80s, while still a teenager, he promoted parties. Just a little later on, his graffiti work on a banner for Tommy Boy Records (and DJ Whiz Kid) helped him attain a part-time gig doing custodial work at that label's offices." In 1983, Calliste Jr. became Cutting Records first recording artists and the companies vice president. ""Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)" became Cutting's first release in November of 1983, and Calliste became the label's vice president." (Kellman, 2007b) Calliste Jr.'s “Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)" has been used in the soundtracks for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and NBA Shootout 2004, and was included on Universal Music's "Definitive Electro & Hip Hop Collection." Calliste Jr. is currently the owner of Hashim Music a music publishing company and long-time member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). "Calliste eventually left Cutting and continued working as a promoter. He also went on to start Bassmint Music, an online label and shop based in Ohio (Kellman, 2007c)."
According to the Columbus Monthly (2000), "The owner Calliste Jr. of Bassmint Music, which provides entertainment to local and national nightclubs, is also responsible for bringing the GUESS? fashion show to the Red Zone."
Kugel (2005) states, "Based in Columbus, Bassmint Music is the brainchild of Jerry Calliste Jr., who is also the CEO and President of Bassmint Music Inc. and the newly formed Caldella Music (publishing) company." Calliste Jr. is very active in the community and "In addition to offering an internship cooperative with Ohio State University, he has also enacted the company's First Step Initiative, which will offer scholarships to teens who excel in and out of the classroom, giving Bassmint a chance to give back to the community." (Kugel, 2005b) Bassmint Music's First Step Initiative has been recognized by the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers community relations department since 2005. Calliste Jr. also supervises interns through an online media & public relations and marketing curriculum he developed. Students participate in this online internship from Ohio University, University of Tampa, and the University of Miami (Florida) School of Communication.
