From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jerry G. Bails (June 26, 1933November 23, 2006) was an American popular culturist. He was known as The Father of Comic Book Fandom.

He was one of the first scholars to approach the comic book genre as a field worthy of serious academic study. Together with Howard Keltner, Bails compiled several extensive inventories of "Golden Age" comics (among the first volumes of their kind):

  • The Collector's Guide to the First Heroic Age of Comics
  • Howard Keltner's Index to Golden Age Comic Books
  • The Authoritative Index to DC Comics

He was also the founding editor of Alter Ego, one of the earlist superhero comics fanzines.
