[edit] High school career
Johnson prepped at Humble High School, where he was coached by Walt Beasley. He began his career playing at wide receiver, but later was converted to quarterback, while also playing safety on defense. Johnson also excelled on the basketball court.
In his sophomore year Johnson was named all-district after grabbing 21 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Playing both quarterback and wide receiver on offense, Johnson threw for 774 yards and 4 touchdowns while also catching 31 passes for 385 yards and seven touchdowns. However, he was still named all-district only at wide receiver. Playing solely quarterback during his senior year, Johnson threw for 1,151 yards and six touchdowns, while — as a dual-threat quarterback — he also rushed for 613 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was named District 22-5A Offensive MVP as well as 2005 Houston Touchdown Club Offensive Player of the Year.
Johnson also received Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine Super Team honors while being named one of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Top 15 Quarterbacks. At the 2006 Texas High School Coaches' Association All-Star game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Johnson was named Most Valuable Offensive Player after tying an All-Star game record with four touchdown passes on 10 of 18 passing for 188 yards, helping lift his South team past the North 30-20 for the second year in a row.[2]
However, Johnson was overshadowed at quarterback among the class of 2006 in Texas by Matthew Stafford and Jevan Snead. Since there were doubts in Johnsons ability to play at quarterback on the next level, he was mainly recruited as an athlete and wide receiver. Johnson made the ranking of the Nation’s Top100 football prospects on neither Rivals.com nor Scout.com. He chose Texas A&M University, where his father Larry played wide receiver and defensive back for the Aggies in the late 1970s, over Nebraska on June 11, 2004.
