[edit] History
Jerez Club de Futbol was formed in 1969 in the small but historic town of Jerez de los Caballeros. The early years were spent in the regional leagues of the Badajoz division of Extremadura. Their first venture into the Tercera came in the season 1984-85, but this was short lived with the club finishing bottom and relegation to the Regional Preferente followed. They returned a year later and slowly began to improve performances to the extent that by 1992/93 they reached the Play-offs for Segunda B for the first time. Promotion via the play-offs was to prove a tortuous affair however, with regular high finishes in the Tercera division counting for little in the play-offs.
Their first disappointment occurred in 1992-93 when a 3rd place finish saw them grouped with Atletico Malagueno, Mairena and Manazares in the play-off group. Four consecutive wins home and away against Mairena and Manazares, meant that they faced a straight play-off against Atletico Malagueno. They lost 1-2 away, but only needed to draw the return match at the Estadio Manuel Calzado Galván to win promotion. A 0-1 defeat meant that the team from Málaga won promotion at Jerez CF’s expense.
Jerez CF won their first Tercera Divisional title in 1993-94 and entered a play-off group that consisted of San Fernando, Guadix and Ciudad Real with an air of confidence. This was misplaced however, and just two wins from the six matches saw them finish bottom of the group. They finished second in the Tercera in 1994-95 behind CD Don Benito and entered the play-offs for a third successive season. Success eluded them once again, when a reborn Málaga CF won promotion, with Jerez CF finishing third, behind Isla Cristina and above UD Puertollano.
Season 1995-96 saw Jerez finish second behind Cacereno in the Tercera, but it was a season that saw these two clubs dominate the division, with each scoring over 120 goals. Jerez scored a 10-0 home victory over Guarena and an 11-0 away victory at Sanvincenteno. The play-offs followed the recent trend however, and Jerez one again finished third in a group the consisted of Guadix, the eventual winners, Tomelloso CF and Chiclana. 1996-97 saw Jerez win their second Tercera Divisional title, but their play-off hoodoo struck again. Grouped with Isla Cristina, Ubeda and Villarrobledo, Jerez CF progressed steadily to the final two matches. Paired against the Andulucians Isla Cristina, a 0-0 draw away from home meant that a victory in the final match would see them promoted. The match however, ended in deadlock and it was Isla Cristina that ascended to Segunda B.
After five successive failures in the play-offs, Jerez finally won promotion in season 1997-98. The Tercera title was secured for a third time and Jerez found themselves in a play-off group that pitted them against San Fernando, Velez and UD Puertollano. Although they won the group by just a point, they were always in control and a final day 0-0 draw with Velez saw Jerez CF promoted to the Segunda B for the first time in their history.
Season 1998-99 saw the start of seven successive seasons in Segunda B, which saw Jerez CF nearly always punch above their diminutive stature. That first season saw a respectable final placing of 12th, with notable victories over Granada CF (4-0), Sevilla B (5-0) and Real Jaén (1-2). A final return of 54 points was a very respectable start at this level. The next season was a little more demanding, but a final placing of 13th and a return of 44 points saw them finish well clear of the relegation zone. With two very decent seasons under their belt, Jerez CF were about to embark on a period of four successive seasons of top ten finishes. 2000-01 was reduced to 36 games following the disbanding of Polideportivo Almería, but a final placing of 9th with 47 points was their best finish to date. Their best performance of the season was undoubtedly their 4-2 victory at champions Cádiz CF.
Confidence was high for the start of the 2001-02 season, and that confidence was well founded with Jerez proving very difficult to beat in losing just 9 of the 38 fixtures. Victories over play-off qualifiers Motril and UD Almería where high points in a very good season which saw them finish with a record of P 38, W13, D16, L9, F46, A 36 Pts 55. The good work continued in 2002-03 with Jerez CF, now well established and respected in the division, finishing 9th. Two wins against soon to be promoted Cádiz CF and local rivals CF Extremadura were high points in as season that saw a points return of 48.
Season 2003-04 was Jerez’s most successful in terms of points, and although they were finally placed 8th, they were in the running for a play-off berth until the final few weeks of the season. Once again they proved very difficult to beat losing just 10 matches, but it was a defence that conceded just 29 goals, the second lowest in the division, that was most impressive. Indeed, if it wasn’t for a run of 5 consecutive draws in October and November, Jerez may well have made the play-offs. Their final record read P38, W15, D13, L10, F35, A29 Pts58.
Their run in Segunda B finally came to an end at the end of season 2004-05. Jerez had a poor start failing to win until week eight, and from that point their season never really got going. Yes there were some wins, 8 in total, including CD Badajoz (1-0) and Lorca Deportiva CF (4-2), but the season was spent in the relegation zone and failure to win any of their final six games, sealed their fate. Their final record for the season was P38, W8, D12, L18, F26, A47, Pts 36.
So for season 2005-06 Jerez CF returned to Tercera Group 14 (Extremadura). The first third of the season really handicapped their chances of an immediate return. 7 defeats in the first 14 matches saw Jerez CF adrift of the play-off places. The remaining 28 matches saw some improvement, but a sixth place finish was at best a moderate season and a final record on P42, W18, D8, L14, F61, A50, Pts62, saw them 19 points short of a play-off place.
Jerez CF started season 2006-07 with the realistic objective of returning to Segunda "B" and the first half of the season could hardly have gone better. Unbeaten in 19 games, winning 13 and drawing the remaining 6 fixtures, they topped Tercera Group 14 (Extremadura) with 45 points, 3 ahead of second placed Imperio Merida. They couldn't repeat their early season form in the second half of the season, but a final points tally of 82 saw them top Tercera Group 14 and enter the promotion play-offs. In the first round of the play-offs, they were paired with Gavà but a 3-1 defeat away in Catalonia in the first leg left them with an uphill battle if they were to regain their Segunda B status. The deficit from the first leg proved to be too large and a 1-1 draw consigned Jerez CF to a third successive season in the Tercera.
