Just before the Lake Wattyl Cycle challenge was about to begin, it was announced that Jeremy had failed a drugs test. He decided to come over to NZL and race in the cycle challenge, and the UCI could not ban him from racing in it as it was not a UCI run event. He ended up winning the race and all of the prize money to go with it. After the event, the organisers decided award the 2nd placed rider the same amount that Yates got. Yates returned to riding again late 2007 winning Tour De Vineyards, K2 and fourth in Langkawi.
