Jeremy Kates is a fictional character in the television series The Nine and is portrayed by Scott Wolf.[1][2] Kates is often an emotionally closed-off member of the group (though still an active part of it), and he clashed with Nick Cavanaugh a bit during the incident in the bank. Reportedly, Kates is Jewish.[3]

[edit] Character history

Jeremy makes his living as a gifted cardiac surgeon, working in the same hospital as Lizzie Miller. Prior to the incident at the bank, Jeremy and Lizzie were in a two-year relationship; due to Jeremy's actions in the bank during the hostage situation, Lizzie has since put the relationship on hold.

Jeremy was unable to save Eva Rios after she was shot by Randall Reese, one of those who held the group hostage in the bank, despite very frantic and heroic efforts. This failure to help Eva has left Jeremy rather shaken in his work, with Randall Reese's presence in the ICU of the same hospital Jeremy works at not helping matters.

Though his relationship with Lizzie is on the rocks, she has recently told him that she is pregnant with his child, a responsibility the both of them are approaching as "friends," with Jeremy vowing to be there for Lizzie in any capacity she needs him. Jeremy still shows loyalty to Lizzie--to the point where he even attempts to kill Randall Reese via heart-attack inducing injection after hearing Lizzie's discomfort over Randall's presence in the hospital and wishes that Randall was no longer living. Nick Cavanaugh discovered this fact during the subsequent investigation, and later elicited a confession from Jeremy as to what he had done. So far, Nick has successfully hidden Jeremy's actions.

Despite remnants of loyalty to Lizzie, there appears to be a growing relationship between Jeremy and Franny Rios, another of the group held hostage in the bank, and sister to Eva Rios. After sleeping together the day of Eva's funeral due to mutual loss (Eva and Jeremy's relationship with Lizzie), the relationship has steadily progressed--Jeremy is clearly attracted to Franny, and has recently declared her "important to him." Franny, though she is aware that Jeremy is to be the father of Lizzie's child, accepts his attentions. As of the moment, Egan Foote is the only other of the group who appears to have an inclination about Jeremy's attraction to Franny.

At a dinner with his family, Jeremy told his parents about Lizzie's pregnancy and revealed the reason why they broke up. Back in the bank, around the fourth hour, Jeremy attempted to run out of an open, but distant, exit, leaving a gunman and Lizzie behind. Though he failed, and knew that he may soon have been shot, Jeremey states that he was most afraid of looking back at Lizzie. As he did so, Lizzie's hurt and betrayed stare shook Jeremy. After the dinner, Jeremy and Lizzie agreed that they were both hurting since the attempted robbery.
