Jelutong Expressway, JEWay, Federal route 1331, or (Lebuhraya Jelutong in Malay) is an extension of Penang Bridge which connects George Town, Penang to Bayan Lepas. This expressway is situated along the eastern coast of Penang Island, off the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia
The funding for the construction of this expressway was contributed jointly by the Malaysian Public Works Department and the Penang state government. Many hectares of land had to be reclaimed to allow the construction of the expressway to take place. The time taken to reuse the reclaimed land is very short and is not enough time for proper settlement of the waste at the sites. There is possibility of earth movement taken place on the site and caused some accidents, but the authority still went ahead with the Jelutong Expressway project to prove critics wrong about the state government inefficiency, in anticipation of the 2004 election.
