Jeffersonville High School was founded in 1871-1872. Originally located in downtown Jeffersonville, Indiana, in the early 1970's a new, larger campus was constructed on the outer eastern edge of the city. It is one of the largest high schools in Indiana, with a student enrollment for the 2007-2008 year of 2,079, the 24th highest population of Indiana high schools, allowing for it compete on the 5A level in the IHSAA.[1] It is also known for its strong basketball teams, especially the 1993 team which won the state tournament.

In 1870 the city of Jeffersonville, Indiana started its high school by teaching teenage boys at the Chestnut Street School, with the girls segregated to another location. In 1874 the sexes were combined, with the principal of Chestnut, E. S. Hopkins, in charge. The first 5 years saw a student populous of 82. Greek, German, and Latin languages were taught, with the latter two required for graduation.[2] In 1882 a new building was built at Chestnut and Pearl.[3]

The construction of the current building started in 1969, and in 1971 opened. The movement from the downtown area, near the City-County building, to the outskirts of the city showed the trend of the city's population to live outside of downtown. [4]

It has an Air Force Junior ROTC program that has won awards for its color guard.

Jeff High also holds an impressive record of boys' sectional track wins, 38 in a row.[5]
