Jefferson Middle School (Jefferson City, Tennessee)

Jefferson Middle School is a middle school located in Jefferson City, Tennessee. The school is home to the football team the Elks, which has won more conference championships than any other middle school in the state of Tennessee.[citation needed]

Like many other middle schools, JMS (Jefferson Middle School) has the basic classes of mathematics, science, English, geography, and/or American history. It also has the special areas of music, art, physical education, study skills, and AEP.

Classes at JMS are typically like others across America. Language Arts, tech lab, physical education (also known as gym), Study Skills (discontinued for the 2007-2008 year), music, art, AEP (Advanced Enrichment Program), math, science, and geography are a majority of middle schooler's schedules. Band, Chorus/Drama, Newspaper/Yearbook and Elk-TV are optional but replace the special area classes music, art, and AEP. Elk-TV is another special class for selected eighth graders only. The schedule has seven-period intervals, each lasting fifty minutes. Every subject takes up one block, except Language Arts, which takes up two. Lunch is included in fourth period, making this class over an hour long. There is a five-minute break between each class in which students can converse, exchange items from their lockers, and progress to class. School begins at 8:10 A.M., and ends at 3:15 PM.

JMS has a large variety of sports ranging. Sports at JMS include: Lady Elks Basketball, Basketball, Cheerleading, Dance Team, Tennis, Golf, Track, Wrestling, Volleyball, and Football.•

•JMS has been conference champs for six years in a row.

[edit] Clubs and Activities

Elk TV†, Yearbook Staff, GATE, Scholars Bowl, Book Club, Travel Club, ELL (English Language Learners), Recorder Choir, Choir, Band, Jr. Beta Club, and Student Council are the activities that can be joined at JMS. A newspaper class, led by Alisa Lemons, is a new program offered to students for a fourth period class.

†A production class that tapes two-four minute segments of news and upcoming activities at JMS. Tim Landefeld first taught this class, but it is now taught by Leslie Thomas. Only eighth graders can participate.

JMS has been very busy, with football games on Tuesday nights and three conference games. The school is administered by JR Sanford and Angela Roberts. Homecoming Queen for 2007 was Katherine Lamb. Also, as of last year, Tim Landefeld replaced Gary Jett as head football coach.

Jefferson Middle School also offers students trips to take throughout the year. The beta club often visits Chicago, New York City, Washington, DC and Williamsburg, VA. The travel club visits many worldwide locations, including Italy and Switzerland (2007), Mexico (2008), Egypt, England, France, and China.
