Jeff Chan

Jeff Chan was born in Concord, California on November 23, 1970[1]. He is an Asian American tenor saxophonist and composer who is currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Chan is inspired by the work of African American creative musicians and takes note of the spirit of dedication, individuality, expressiveness, and freedom shown through their music. His albums has received have received critical acclaim such as in Cadence magazine and San Francisco Weekly.[2] He is a key part of the Asian-American Creative Music Movement, and his currently working on Big Fun Philharmonic which is a large ensemble based on the core idea of giving musicians freedom to express themselves as vividly as possible.[3]

Chan states his influences include Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman. He bases his music on avant-garde Chicago Jazz music which is a large influence of the Asian-American Creative Music Movement. Chan's ideology is to create music that is personal, original, and instills on the listener the inspiration of the music.[4]
