[edit] Name

I have removed the reference stating "Jean Batten was born Joan Batten" because there are no obvious authoritative references. In fact, the BBC says here that she "was originally christened Jane after her grandmother, but the name managed to evolve into Jean." Maybe best not to mention either Joan or Jean. Opinions? Jean Batten Primary School

I was a foundation pupil of this School in Mangere, Auckland, which opened in 1970. Even though I was probably only about eight at the time, I remember clearly that Jean Batten visited the School. I'm pretty certain she donated a painting of Percival Gull that hangs in the Principal's office and that she planted a pohutukawa tree in the School grounds. I doubt I would be able find a reference to this, but wondered whether it could be included?
