Jeanne Mance (November 12, 1606June 18, 1673) was a French settler in Montreal.

[edit] Bio

Mance was born in Langres, in eastern France. From the very beginning, she believed that God created her to serve Canada. Since Mance had little money, she received a loan from a few wealthy French women with whom she was acquainted. Mance went to New France with Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1641 and is considered one of the founders of Montreal because she opened a hospital. She founded North America's first hospital, l'Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal, completed in 1645. When it was established, Montreal was so small that it only had 40 citizens. By the time Jeanne Mance died in 1673, the population had risen substantially, to 1,500. Today, Montreal is home to 3.6 million people.
