Jean Richard (April 18, 1921 - December 12, 2001) was a famous French actor.

He was born in the town of Bessines, France and began his career as a caricaturist before acting in comedy films. Although he played a part in more than 80 movies, it was his TV role as Maigret that made him famous. He portrayed the famous inspector character from Georges Simenon's novels for over 20 years. He also created the well-known Jean Richard Circus. He died due to complications from cancer.

  • Jean Richard, due to his involvement with a zoo and a circus, is caricatured as a trainer of lions on page 40 of the comic Asterix and the Laurel Wreath.
  • In the 1970s Richard featured as a comic charicature in many of the comics of the popular character Pif. Most of his stories revolved around being a detective investigating a mystery, which the reader also had to solve.
  • Although Richard appeared as Maigret for many decades, Maigret creatoe George Simenon disliked him since he failed to take his hat off when entering a room.
