Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863–1930) was an American artist who painted The Eve of Discovery, showing a caravel as it may have appeared in the 1400s. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the pupil of his father, Stephen James Ferris, portrait painter and a devotee of Jean Leon Gerome and Mariano Fortuny. His uncle through his mother was Thomas Moran. Among his works is The First Thanksgiving, pictured to the right. He also did a picture concerning the pirate, Blackbeards capture.
