Jean Chouan is the nom de guerre of Jean Cottereau (October 30, 1757–July 28, 1794) a French insurrection counter-revolutionary and royalist.
Born in Saint-Berthevin (Mayenne) Chouan and brothers Pierre, François and Rene were called chouan ("the silent one") by their father.
He was sentenced to death for killing Olivier Jagu in an inn of Saint-Germain-of-Fouilloux in 1780, but he escaped. He was later caught in 1785 and served one year.
According to sources, Chouan died in Olivet (Mayenne), but the cause of death has been disputed.
The 1926 Luitz-Morat film Jean Chouan stars Maurice Lagrenée as Chouan.
