[edit] Early Years
Born Memorial Day, May 27, 1985, in Munster, Indiana, Joe burst upon the scene of life. Living his infant and toddler years in Highland, Indiana in Northwest Indiana, Joe moved to Plymouth, Indiana when he was 5 years old. As of 1990, Joe is a resident of Plymouth, the North Central Indiana town.
Beginning kindergarten at the age of six in 1991 at Webster Elementary School, Joe showed an interest in academics at a very young age. He was forced to transfer to Washington Elementary School in 1993 as a result of school re-districting. Not long after his transfer to Washington, Joe was notified by Highlights Magazine that a picture he had drawn of a triceratops would be published in the monthly childrens' periodical. Joe was rewarded by a feature artical in The Pilot-News, Plymouth's hometown paper, which was received rather well by the community. He received praise at school and the Mayor of Plymouth sent him a city pin in the mail.
Joe began showing an interest in athletics in 1995, spanning from his love for Chicago area sports teams. Joe made the Washington Elementary Fifth Grade Basketball team during his final year at Washington. Joe started on the A team along with his brother Mark, and lifelong friends Michael Bembenick and Cameron Engle. The A team went undefeated during the 1995-1996 campaign, but the season was marred by a loss to the lackluster Jefferson Jets on the final day of the season by the B team. Harsh criticism followed the youngsters on the B team from that day forward, mostly by firey coach Bob Girten.
Though Joe only averaged 1.2 points and 0.8 rebounds per game, his hustle is said to have inspired several other teammates. He is best known for his emphatic block of Kyle Wallace, of the Menominee Magic, on Wallace's home court towards the end of the season. To this day, Wallace denies the rejection ever took place.
Joe played Pony League Baseball until he was a freshman in high school in 2000. He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers Pony League Team until he and his brother were traded to the New York Yankees to reunite with B-League coach Dewayne Taviner in 1999. Joe hit 5 career home-runs with two coming off Kyle Burnam of the Chicago White Sox (An accuracy dispute has just erupted over this article. The pitcher does not recall the alleged 'home runs') . The highlight of Joe's baseball career came against pitcher Matt Haug of the Boston Red Sox. Down 0-2 in the count, Haug made the mistake of serving up a high fastball to Joe, who hit it 400+ feet over the Green Monster-like fence in left field. The 3-run moonshot gave the Yankees the lead at the time, but they were not able to overcome the late Red Sox surge.
At Lincoln Junior High School, Joe ran cross country, track, and played basketball all three years. He was often the last player on the bench on the junior high's B team. In his first B-team game of 1998 at North Liberty Junior High School's gym, Joe and fellow starting center Jake Creighbaum combined for 25 points (Joe with 10) and a couple of rebounds. Despite his initial success that year, Byelick would not score again for several games, tipping in a Sean Evans basket at home aginst Urey Middle School. Joe's breakout performance came in late 1999 against the Rochester Zebras. Coach Jim Keister inserted Joe into the starting lineup a day after Evans went down due to an ankle injury. Joe capitalized by scoring 10 points and adding a memorable block that went high into the rafters of Lincoln's gym. Joe was well-received by the fans during his junior high basketball years, often trying to impress the cheerleaders to no avail.
Joe attended Plymouth High School, graduating in a class of over 250 in 2004.
[edit] College Years
Upon graduation from Plymouth High School in May 2004, Joe chose to attend Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Beginning as a major in Economics, Joe chose to change his major to Business Management citing "too many supply and demand charts." It has been said that Joe is happy with his change of concentration and has done relatively well academically since the change.
It was at Purdue where Joe discovered the joys and evils of alcoholic beverages one January night in 2005 at the apartment of Evan Smith.
Involved in several activities through student organizations and employment at Purdue, Joe enjoyed staying academically active. He is currently in his fourth semester as a teaching assistant for Computer Science 235, Introduction to Organizational Computing, and in his fifth semester as an undergraduate assistant for Math 154, Algebra and Trigonometry II.
During the summer of 2007, Joe worked with JPMorgan Chase as an Information Techology Intern in Chicago, Illinois. It was here where he met close friends and associates Sean Costello and Brendan Hardy, with whom he confided in a life-long goal of his to consume an entire keg in a one-week period of time. Rumors swirled surrounding a meeting between the three coworkers on a Saturday in mid-June 2007 at the River Shannon Bar in the Lincoln Park Neighborhood, north of downtown Chicago in which Joe went public with this goal.
In the next year or so, Joe plans to evaluate his post-undergraduate options which include full-time employment, an MBA program, or Law School. Until then, Joe looks forward to the opportunity to make lasting contributions to Purdue's academic and social community.
