[edit] Birth
Jonathan was born sometime in the morning of March 3, 1981, just over a week late. His initial due date was February 25, 1981. He began life in a very dramatic fashion, as his mother was required to be rushed to the hospital in the family car, after experiencing extreme abdominal pain, caused by a seperated placenta. This is known as Placenta Previa, and resulted in an emergency Ceasarian Section. During the drive, Peter ran through a red light, and was stopped by police. When they saw the state of Gabriele, they provided a Police escort to the hospital. Reports differ, however it is belived that there was at least a single police car leading Peter to the hospital.
Immediatly following his birth, Peter rushed to York University in order to have his photograph taken for the 1981 Calumet College Graduating class composite picture. He then returned to the hospital to see his son, who had been wrapped in a pink blanket. At the time of his birth, there had been no clean blue blankets. His mother, still groggy from the surgery, was heard to say:
“ | ...that is not my child. Bring me my child.... | ” |
[edit] Growing up and Family
Uncharacteristically, Peter stayed home with Jonathan, while Gabriele returned to her job at York University shortly after the birth. Within Jonathan's first year, and through the friendship of Gabriele with author and Toronto Star columnest, Judy Steed, Jonathan and Peter were featured in a TV Ontario documentary about alternate family structures. Jonathan still has a copy of this program, and has flashes of memory from the recording.
Growing up was difficult for Jonathan, as he remembers his parents in constant arguments. Specifically, Jonathan remembers his parents standing at opposite ends of the dining room fighting, while he himself took solice in watching the Disney picture, Mary Poppins with Julie Andrews.
Jonathan's parents divorced when he was five years old, and he lived with his father until he was 21. Jonathan saw his mother every Wednesday, and on alternate weekends.
[edit] Gabriele and her Family
Jonathan's mother, Gabriele (born August 26, 1947 in Stuttgart, Germany) is the only child of Elisabeth and Emil. When she was seven, her father came to Canada. She and her mother followed shortly thereafter.
[edit] Gabriele
Gabriele has worked for York University for over thirty years, and is still known as having founded the York University Staff Association (YUSA) in the 1970's. A National Film Board of Canada film, titled Finger Pinky, was based on the novella by Judy Steed.
[edit] Gabriele's father, Emil
Emil was one of twelve siblings, and when he passed on February 8, 2007, aged 87 from natural causes, he was the last of them to die. He served in the German Army in World War II, and subsequently was trained as a Machinist, and taught Machine Shop for many years when the family moved to Toronto.
During World War II, he served in the German Army on the Russian front lines as a radio operator. He survived because he disobeyed direct orders, and along with several others retreated. This, he blieved, saved his life. He was never repremanded for his actions.
He began to drink heavily once he retired.
[edit] Gabriele's mother, Elisabeth
Elisabeth was the younger of two sisters. She has, since the death of her own parents in the late 1970's, held a grudge against her older sister, Eddi, stemming from the fact that she feels that she did not receive her portion of the inheritance.
Elisabeth served as a file clerk for several downtown Toronto law firms for many years, until retiring. She spent several years looking after Jonathan.
She is known for her fast and accurate ability to do simple arithmetic without aid.
[edit] Gabriele's aunt, Eddi
The elder of the two sisters, Eddi, never travelled outside of Germany except to Austria and Switzerland. She inherited from her parents which caused a rift between herself and her sister until her death. She served as a salesclerk at Blyle for many years. She eventually married her distant cousin, Walter, at his insistence.
Walter passed in the late 1980's leaving Eddi to inherit. Walter had constructed a three-storey/three-unit walkup apartment building in the town of Immenstaad on the Bodensee in Germany. She lived in the third floor unit, and continued to rent out the first and second floor units after the death of Walter. Gabriele flew to Germany for Walter's funeral. The following year, Jonathan, aged 7, joined his mother for two weeks in Germany. They stayed with Eddi in the third floor apartment for the duration of their visit. This was Jonathan's first trip outside of Canada, and the first time that he had been on an airplane. Since this first trip, Jonathan has flown many times.
Eddi eventually sold the apartment building to Gabriele's cousin, who moved into the first floor flat, and in-laws moved into the third floor flat. The second floor was used as a 'travellers rest point'.
Eddi passed in 2006, leaving her inheritance to Gabriele.
[edit] Peter and his Family
Jonathan's father, Peter (born July 14, 1947 in London, England) was the first child, and only son, of George and Anne. When he was seven, his parents moved him, and his sister Susan (who changed her name to Chapelle when she married), to Montreal. Peter's youngest sister, Georgina (Gig) was born in Canada.
[edit] Peter
Peter had several childhood illnesses which have plagued him into adulthood. He now suffers from arthritis, and has had surgery for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Peter became a teacher in the late 1990's, after leaving Toronto Public Health. He ran for Executive Officer of the Elementary Teacher's of Toronto (ETT) several years after becoming a teacher. He is still an Executive Officer with ETT.
Peter has had a difficult relationship with his parents, and sisters. Jonathan and Peter also have a distant relationship, which has been compared to that of brothers, as opposed to 'father-son'.
[edit] Peter's father, George
George was trained as a teacher, and became a Principal in Ontario. He became the Principal of Peter's school, and remained in this post for the duration of his education. His sisters did not go to the same school. George was demoted from his Principalship for a period of time.
George served in the Merchant Navy during World War II, where he was known to read the non-fiction books that were brought on board. A fact that he stressed to all of his children and grandchildren
George married Anne in London after World War II. He currently suffers from the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, and lives in Northern Scotland.
[edit] Ted E Bear
George created a character known as Ted E Bear, which he told to his children, and subsequently to his grandchildren. These were unique, and original stories. However, with the onset of his Alzheimer's, the family feels that these stories have been permanantly lost. George never transcribed them.
Each of his grandchildren have traces of Ted E Bear, but none contain enough information to compile and pass on.
[edit] Peter's mother, Anne
Anne worked for the Hudson's Bay Company in Montreal as a buyer, and raised her three children as they moved to various cities.
[edit] Georgina and Susan
Susan (Chapelle) is Peter's middle sister; Georgina (Gig) is Peter's youngest sister.
Chapelle married and had two daughters, Zada and Gita. Gig married and also had two daughters, Elenore and Katherine.
Chapelle currently lives in Toronto, and has been an actor for many years, having won a Genie award. She is known for playing Maggie O'Connell in the 1977 production of W.O. Mitchel's Who has seen the Wind. Chapelle's long time companion is John, who she lives with in Toronto.
Gig grew up in various cities, and currently lives in the north of Scotland, near George and Anne, with her husband, Neil. Gig has been a Cancer Care nurse for many years.
[edit] Brickwood Ancestry
Jonathan is the only male cousin, and the third born. Interestingly, the cousins have retained a gender line. Gig and Chapelle (the two daughters) each gave birth to two daughters, while Peter (the only son) fathered the only male cousin.
Jonathan takes great pride in this fact, and that he would be the third heir and successor, after George and Peter, for any titles. If the family was one of an aristocratic background, of course.

[edit] Controversy over last name
There is a family dispute with regards to the Brickwood surname, which is believed to actually be Mason. The dispute originates from the fact that there is no father listed on George's certificate of birth, and that his mother was pregnant after George's father had been absent for some months.
The name of Mason is believed to be the surname of the gentleman in question. George, it is believed, was named after George Mason to spite his father.
[edit] Summer Vacation
Under Jonathan's custody agreement, his parents had joint custody, and split the school summer break. Peter had Jonathan during July, and Gabriele had him for August.
[edit] Kawagama Lake
When George brought the family from England, he bought a portion of land on Kawagama Lake, which eventually passed to Peter. Each summer, Peter would take Jonathan to the cottage for several weeks.
Jonathan has mixed memories of these trips, and usually brought his VHS collection with him. He did however become quite close to an elderly American couple who had been on the lake longer than the family cottage. They become surrogate like grandparents, while he was there.
Jonathan was at the cottage on August 31, 1997 and learned of the death of Princess Diana from them.
Peter has since sold the cottage to Gig, who replaced the original structure with a new two-storey, four bedroom building. Both Jonathan and Peter have certain reservations about the cottage, most notable about the 'No Electronics Zone' rule, imposed. Jonathan and Peter have both broken this rule on several occasions.
[edit] Germany
From age 7 until around 17, almost every summer for two weeks, Jonathan and Gabriele visited the German relatives in southern Germany. They stayed with 'Tante Eddi' while they were there.
[edit] Cottages
Interspresed with his trips to Germany, Jonathan, Gabriele, Elisabeth and Emil would rent a cottage for one or two weeks, where they would go.
Jonathan has fun memories of these cottages, as each had a bizzare and unique characteristic. One, in particular, was a cottage that was a converted motel, and to get to one bedroom you had to walk through another, and the bathroom. The bathroom in question, had a window behind the shower, which opened into a bedroom.
[edit] Education
Jonathan attended Humbercrest Junior/Senior Public School from age 5 until 13, when he then moved to High School and Runnymede Collegiate Institute.
Jonathan has not completed any post-secondary education.
[edit] Sitters
After Jonathan's parents divorced, he progressed through a series of sitters from age 6 until he was 14. After which, it was felt that Jonathan could remain home alone.

[edit] Hobbies and Interests
Jonathan enjoys writing, and watching television. He also is quite keen on Assassin's Creed for Playstation 3
[edit] Personal Training
In March 2007, Jonathan won a three-month membership to a health club. As a result he began Personal Training sessions, which he continues to this day. He finds it quite amusing that he was the kid who never enjoyed gym class during elementary and high school.
His goal is to remain fit, and tone and trim. He has encouragement from many angles, and feels guilty the days he falters.
