A request for the future

I know you're busy, but this actually isn't a request for right now.

I've just finished the major work on Indonesian occupation of East Timor (1975-1999), probably my most important (and exhausting) Wikipedia work to date. Once it's reached GA status, I'll be soliciting peer reviews, so I thought I'd ask early so you can either put it on your schedule or let me find backups. =) Cheers. – Scartol • Tok 01:40, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Jay, thanks for the belated but much appreciated congratulations. Don't think I've forgotten your help during the dark (and cute and fuzzy) days of Knut's FAC; any assistance you need I'll be glad to give! Us librarians really come in handy. I didn't know that Fitz's article was so skimpy, and Hemingway, although a GA, has always been a mess. Bleh. I must say that I'm a bigger fan of Hemingway's work than I am Fitzgerald's, but Ernest and his many-toed cats irk me in a way that Fitz and his crazy wife don't. Funny that you pick two alcoholics as future projects; it's good to know that I'm not the only one drawn to researching eccentrics. :) Speaking of eccentrics, Roger asked me to help with Arthur Rimbaud, but that's probably going to be long term. Hi, Jay. Thanks for responding on my talk page; I really appreciate that. I'm not certain as to why there is a focus on the term "mailing list." I don't know of any mailing list. Every once in a while I'm copied on an e-mail sent to a bunch of people. Sometimes the e-mails are from Jay, sometimes they are from others. Who is copied on the e-mails depends on the topic. Florence, Cary, or Mike, for example, often copy OTRS volunteers with admin privs for BLP articles under lockdown. Other than wiki-en-l, accounts-en-l, unblock-en-l, and otrs-en-l and wikiquality, I'm on no wiki-related mailing lists, official or unofficial (and note all the ones I am on are all official - with the only closed ones being unblock and OTRS, because we often get real-life names and addresses and such that should not be public). Maybe I am completely wrong, and I would appreciate being corrected if so, but I believe John was as interested in what Jay does as what I have done, if not more so, and was hoping that I would implicate Jay in some scheme. Jayjg is a very polarizing figure on en-wiki. Some people love him, and some people hate him, and others love to hate him (I know of no one who hates to love him . He has gotten himself involved in loads of wikidrama, and has become the focus of the enmity of many people. Need I refer to hivemind and wikipedia review? On the one hand, I feel badly that anyone, be it Jay or Kelly Martin (for an example of the other extreme) has to have their wiki-related activities under such scrutiny and enmity. On the other hand, I believe they all had a significant share in bringing it upon themselves. There are plenty of people on wiki who have different viewpoints and upbringings who can still work cordially together, if not amicably. I have co-mentored difficult editors with Fayssal, even though I am an American Jew and he is a Moroccan Muslim. He is one of the people on wiki which I respect the most, notwithstanding the differences in our upbringings. I am very gratified by and appreciative of NSH001's comments on the RfB, which allow me to think that the tightrope I try to walk is recognized by others. Back to that e-mail, my comments on the list specifically were not a defense or accusation of the e-mail—they were an explanation for my actions and why I thought they were appropriate per wiki guideline and policy notwithstanding the immediate cause of my clicking on the page. If you look at my edit history, you will find something like 260+ edits on that page and another 90+ on its talk, most way before the e-mail. Whether that e-mail in and of itself was appropriate--well, it was not the best thing Jay has ever done, I concur. Why I was copied? Likely because I have 350+ edits on that topic, am familiar with it, and have edited it before. But I am no more responsible for Jay's actions than you are for my actions. Furthermore, I am not naïve enough to think that Jay is the only person ever to have contacted another editor about an article or prospective edits via e-mail. I am not certain that is something that we can control, for better or for worse. As I said, in my mind, the only issue that should have been being discussed at my RfB was if *I* could be trusted as a 'crat, and whether or not *I* am subject to influences unwelcomed by the community. I believe I am not, and so do others. If John does not wish to believe so, that is his choice and I respect that. But using my RfB as a vehicle to discuss Jay is no more appropriate than people using Riana's RfB (which I supported) to discuss Kelly Martin. My request for bureaucratship

Dear JayHenry, thank you for taking part in my RfB. As you may know, it was not passed by bureaucrats.
I would, however, like to thank you for taking the time to voice your support, despite concerns cited by the opposition. Although RfA/B isn't really about a person, but more about the community, I was deeply touched and honoured by the outpouring of support and interest in the discussion. I can only hope that you don't feel your opinion was not considered enough - bureaucrats have to give everyone's thoughts weight.
I also hope that the results of this RfB lead to some change in the way we approach RfBs, and some thought about whether long-entrenched standards are a good thing in our growing and increasingly heterogenous community.
I was a little miserable after the results came out, so I'm going to spread the love via dancing hippos. As you do. :)

Peer review idea

Hi, I have made a proposal that no peer review request be archived without some response. To aid in this, there is a new list of PR requests at least one week old that have had no repsonses beyond a semi-automated peer review. This list is at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog.

There are just over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, so I figure if each of these volunteers reviewed just one or two PR requests without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog (as there have been 2 or 3 such unanswered requests a day on average).

I think such admins are increasingly a net negative to our project. Thanks for a thoughtful and responsive answer. I try to be polite. I appreciate what you say about experience in writing/editing articles, and I mostly agree with you. This wasn't about Aleta's RFA as you gathered, more about WP in general. I suspect that it's much easier to participate in deletion and other discussion venues (doing what I call drive-by voting, without much in the way of thoughtful and rational arguments) than to do the harder (I think) work of creating and improving articles. Which is what Wikipedia is all about. The housekeeping is just to support creating and improving articles, otherwise it's just office politics. It's like the Army, in that I've heard that there are, more or less, ten support personnel for every actual combat soldier. All necessary, but in support of the basic mission nevertheless. Street Children Article

Hi JayHenry, You may remember that back in February you said you might be able to offer some assistance to my re-write of the article on street children. It's gotten a little bit stalled - mixed reviews without any real substantive criticism. One editor remarked, "The edit is unsourced, removes a large amount of information, and is POV. You should not try to redo the edit without further discussion. Your current edit seems more like an essay than an encyclopedia article." Others consider what I have written to be an improvement on the current article. I have also solicited reactions from experts in the field who are not associated with Wikipedia and they have approved of the article I have prepared. I am not averse to changing the article but I really do need some guidance here on a fairly specific level. Where, for instance, is the dread POV rearing its ugly little head? Or is it all POV? Advocate

Hi Shoessss, wanted to respond to your neutral at EyeSerene's RFA. I'm curious, do you also oppose editors who have been through admin coaching? An admin coach will often tell an editor how to answer questions before an editor has a chance to respond. Your objection is noted, and I won't do it again, but I'm curious: Do you feel that I've done something different from admin coaching and that it should therefore be used to punish the candidate? --JayHenry (talk) 01:06, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

First, let me say Hello --JayHenry. Second, I think you will find, if you review my contributions and edit history, that the last thing I try to do is punish the son for the faults of the father. Or you would have not asked that first question. Second, as you pointed out; “…An admin coach will often tell an editor how to answer questions.” That is very different from an administrator coach answering the question. Thirdly, how am I punishing the caudate, I voiced a Neutral position. Unless terminology has changed, to me that means neither support or oppose. Finally, the comment was not so much directed at the candidate, but rather at both Nick and yourself. Which I thought was self-explanatory by the phrasing of the opinion: "...You are doing him/her no favors by your behavior". Hope this helps in why I expressed my opinion. Thanks. Well, perhaps punishment was too strong a word. But you are declining to support an excellent candidate because of the behaviour of other people over whom the candidate has no control. I'm not actually a friend of EyeSerene (in fact, embarrassingly, my first contact with him will be when I go to his page and Bibliomanic's page to apologize for the damage I've done to the RFA. I have robbed the candidate of your support by my actions, and have taken the focus away from the candidate and made it of myself.)

But tell me, because I honestly don't see this at all: what is the difference with admin coaching? I actually don't see a difference, other than that I provided the answer on the RFA page, whereas an admin coach provides the answer on a different page. Hey Guy, first let me say I am not quoting policy – rules – or law, I am only stating my opinion. I view the Rfa process as a way for the community, other than the nominators and people who have worked closely with the candidate, to get to know an individual by reviewing the candidates edit count – talk page – past contributions and most importantly THEIR answers to the questions. Even questions posed by an editor that has joined Wikipedia as recently as an hour ago. When you answer the question, how does that give me insight to the candidate’s position on that particular question or policy? It gives me an idea what you may think, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the process. You are not asking for the position, the candidate is and likewise, I am not looking at you for the position, rather the candidate. Hence, I want the candidate to answer. That is the great things about Wikipedia, opinions are just that, opinions! Consensus is what counts more than just adding up the yes or no opinions. In that consensus is derived by giving weight to an argument based on the merits or faults of any given reasoning, I doubt that my opinion will be considered in the outcome. Lament

Well JayHenry, all I see are glasses half empty tonight. I leave a comment on a FAC, which I rarely do, with a question about the content of an article—and above me is a debate about whether JSTOR links should be included in the references, and below me is someone claiming that they must oppose because some of the sources are in Spanish, which of course creates paragraphs of that special breed of FAC debate, where the overly patient attempt to bend over backwards to satisfy arbitrarily narrow readings of policy. FAC motto: "What, we're talking about the inherent merit of an article? I thought this was debate practice!"

And I'm watching a documentary on Walt Whitman (American Experience), and I look at the Good Article on him, which essentially touches on nothing that is interesting about him and his work, as the documentary does (themes, if you will)—but it still manages to have an inline citation for every prosaic sentence of biography, because that's a "good thing" on wikipedia (though I mean no offense to the person who did that much work on the article). Do we know what we're doing here? Why is everything substantial usurped by marginalia? Because we're afraid to deal with the substantial, to admit that most of us don't know what we're dealing with. Just as in real organizations, we invent a bureaucracy to cover this all up, in which we can discuss a million things without reference to desired ends, and in doing so create a meaning in being here that is a supplement to the original reason. The substantial would require a commitment to something other than total subjectivity regarding what's interesting or important; it might require a trivial synthesis to make a cogent whole. It's so bloody uninspired, the new wikipedia (and it's true, I'm imagining an old wikipedia that probably never existed). Thanks. Unfortunately, the FA on Evolution of mammals closed before I had a chance to take too much of a look, but there's pretty clearly a lot of work to be done. I'll try to give it a thorough read and offer some suggestions. While I'm thinking of it, there's a paper on Libycosaurus that's currently free here: [3] Its pretty dry stuff, even by taxonomic standards, but it probably won't be free for long (Elsevier changes its free issues pretty frequently), so you might want to grab it if you're interested.--Helioseus (talk) 02:11, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

There's a new book out that should have a good overview of anthracotheres: [4] I haven't picked up a copy myself yet, but from the one chapter I've seen, it seems to give readable, up to date overviews of the characteristics, evolution, and phylogeny of each family. User:Apokryltaros does a thankless job (he seems to get more than his fair share of grief). Evolution of mammals

Hi, you raised one point in the FA review that was archived before I noticed it. You were right that, if we calcualte the dates from the normal start and end-dates of the Permian and Jurassic, the evolution of mammals took over 90M years (in fact I make it closer to 100M). I wan't using the dates strictly in the article intro, just as a rough frame of reference. The real answer depends very much on which animals you take as the start and end. I took Hadrodocium as the end (195M years ago, so I'll edit the intro to say "early Jurassic" for now): it doesn't fit the newer definition of "mammal" (last common ancestor of monotremes and other modern mammals) but is the earliest known fossil that meets the traditional jaw-ear criterion without being disqualified as obviously not an ancestor for other reasons (multituberculates would have to be disqualified for that reason, but fortunately the earliest known multis are later than Hadrodocium). So picking an end-point is not easy.

Choosing a start-point is no easier: the 1st therapsid (early in the mid-Permian)? the 1st pelycosaur (a bit earlier)? the 1st amniote (conjectural)? It doesn't help that Permian stratigraphy and dating seem to be a bit of a mess (see Therapsida: Overview).

Hi, I was cleaning up the GA noms with WP:AWB, and noticed this odd spelling in Zelda Fitzgerald: "...it was not reciprocal as it often is in Smarriages....". Speaking of Fitzgerald, have you ever read Nonconformity by Nelson Algren? I consider it the best book ever written about writing, particularly about the writer's responsibilities.

I know what you mean about getting things up to high standards and the anxiety which comes with presenting one's work to an esteemed reviewer. I was extremely fortunate to have her review Balzac back when (and it helped me link up with some other really superb editors as well, especially that guy who reminded me I lived near a really great library).
