Dr. Javad Tabatabaei (also Tabatabai ) is an Azerbaijanian political philosopher, historian and a distinguished university professor who was born and brought up in Tabriz.

Javad Tabatabaei studied law at Tehran University. Then he shifted to philosophy and did his doctorate works at Sorbonne University. Javad Tabatabaei was a professor of philosophy at University of Strasbourg as well as Tehran University. He was also a visiting scholar at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

He is one of the most influential member of Iranian intellectual circle. Javad Tabatabaei contributed significantly to understanding of western philosophy in Iran. He is working on a project called Persian modernism.
