Part of the 2007-08 South Pacific cyclone season |
Tropical Cyclone Daman (JTWC Designation: 05P, RSMC Nadi Designation: 04F, also known as Severe Tropical Cyclone Daman.) was the Fourth Tropical Depression and the first named Tropical Cyclone of the 2007-08 South Pacific cyclone season. Daman formed as a Tropical Depression on December 3, and was assigned the name Daman on December 5 by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) Nadi in Fiji.
RSMC Nadi Considered Tropical Cyclone Daman to have peak wind speeds of 105 knots with gusts to 140 kts early on December 7, which is equilvant to a Category 4 Cyclone on the Australian Tropical Cyclone Scale. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center also considered Daman to have peak wind speeds of 105 Knots which is equivlant a Strong Category 3 Cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.
Later on December 7 Severe Tropical Cyclone Daman made landfall on the Fijian island of Cikobia, allthough there were no deaths reported on Tropical Cyclone it Caused over 500,000 dollars worth of damage. Daman was the first Tropical Cyclone To make landfall on Fiji since Tropical Cyclone Ami in 2003.

[edit] Storm History
On the 3 December an area of disturbed weather near the International Dateline formed into a Tropical Low [1] and then later that evening was upgraded to Tropical Depression 04F by the Regional Specialised Metrological Center (RSMC) at Nadi in Fiji. [2] The next day a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert was issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) as it was crossing the International Date Line. [3]
On the 5 December Tropical Depression 04F was upgraded to Tropical Cyclone Daman by the RSMC in Nadi. [4] Later that day the JTWC issued their first Tropical Cyclone warning on Tropical Cyclone 05P (Daman)[5]. On the 6 December Daman became slow moving for a while as it rapidly intensified into a Severe Tropical Cyclone Reaching Peak winds of 105 Knots with gusts of 140 Knots which made Daman a category Four Cyclone on the Australian Scale.[6] This Rapid intensification didn’t last for very long though due to Daman Making landfall on the Fijian Island of Cikobia the next day. Daman made landfall as a category 4 Cyclone on the Australian Tropical Cyclone Scale with Gusts of up to 135kts (155 Mph 250 Km/h) though Daman missed the two main islands of Fiji.
Tropical Cyclone Daman weakened into a category 3 cyclone on the after it made landfall early on December 8. Later that day RSMC Nadi also started to issue Special weather bulletins for Tonga which contained a Tropical Cyclone Alert for Tonga at the same time. [7]. However these alerts for Tonga were then cancelled within the next special bulletin due to Daman weakening further. Daman was also now expected to take a turn to the south east of Tonga. [8] On The 9 December the JTWC issued their final Tropical Cyclone Warning on Tropical Cyclone 05P Daman saying that there was no Convection left in the low level circulation center (LLCC). On the same day RSMC Nadi downgraded the Daman to a Tropical Depression and then terminated the issuing of their Tropical Disturbance Advisories saying that the LLCC was exposed. RSMC Nadi Continued to monitor Tropical Depression Daman within their Tropical disturbance Summaries and marine bulletins. RSMC Nadi then released their final Tropical Disturbance summary on Tropical Depression 04F (Ex Daman) the next day.

[edit] Fiji
As Tropical Depression 04F intensifed into Tropical Cyclone Daman RSMC Nadi Started to issue Special weather Bulletins for the Islands of Fiji and Rotuma on the 5 December which contained Gale Warnings for both Fiji and Rotuma. These were upgraded to Storm Warnings later that day. The Storm Warnings were upgraded to Hurricane Warnings as Daman aproached land on the 7 December. [9]
Hurricanne Warnings were issued for some of the larger islands of Fiji which included Cikobia and Vanua Levu
