On 25 February an area of convection developed south of Pohnpei, Micronesia. The JTWC issued a TCFA and then Designated it Tropical Depression 02W on the 26 February. It Quickly strengthend in to a tropical storm with the JTWC upgrading the Depression on the 27 February and the JMA named the Cyclone Tropical storm Mitag early on the 28 February
