Jass

Jass was also an early name for Jazz music.

Jass is the name of a trick taking card game. It is popular in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Vorarlberg (Austria), and is sometimes considered as the national game in Switzerland.

It is played with a deck of 36 cards (A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6), used with French, swiss-german or Austrian cards.

While many variants of the game exist, with 2 to 6 players, the most commonly played is called chibre (Schieber), and involves 2 teams of 2 players playing against each other.

The point values for the cards are as follows:

In trump: J=20, 9=14, A=11, K=4, Q=3, 10=10 (8, 7, & 6 have no point value)

non-trump: A=11, K=4, Q=3, J= 2, 10=10 (9, 8, 7, & 6 have no point value)

If "Obenabe/Bock" (no trump, A high) is called:

A=11, K=4, Q=3, J= 2, 10=10, 8=8, (9, 7, & 6 have no point value)

If "Undenufe/Geiss" (no trump, 6 high) is called:

6=11, K=4, Q=3, J= 2, 10=10, 8=8, (9, 7, & A have no point value) (Swiss variant)
A=11, K=4, Q=3, J= 2, 10=10, 8=8, (9, 7, & 6 have no point value) (Austrian variant)
