Jason Paul McCaslin (born September 3, 1980 in Toronto, Ontario), better known as "Cone", is the bass guitarist and backing vocalist of Canadian punk rock band Sum 41. He joined the band as the last member of its current lineup in February 1999, replacing Mark Spicoluk. Sum 41 was signed by Island Records only months after he joined. He is of Scottish descent.[citation needed] His favourite Sum 41 songs are No Reason and Over My Head (Better Off Dead).[citation needed]
McCaslin began playing bass when he was 14 years old as a member of a grunge garage band called Second Opinion with Avril Lavigne's former drummer, Matt Brann, and other neighbours. He was the last musician to join, and because the other band members had already chosen their instruments, he was left with no choice but to play the bass.[citation needed]
Before joining Sum 41, he was an usher at a movie theatre.[citation needed] He supposedly acquired the nickname "Cone" from fellow band member Deryck Whibley in high school because he frequently ate ice cream cones at lunch.[1][2] (However, he is now lactose intolerant, and can no longer eat ice cream.)[citation needed]
Despite otherwise being somewhat introverted, Cone is the most frequently visible member of the band to its fans, often speaking to the public and answering questions on the band's official website. Otherwise, he is usually the quietest.[citation needed]
Recently, he co-created the Garage punk/rock side project The Operation M.D. with Todd Morse (of Juliette and the Licks), in which he is known under the name Dr. Dynamite.
