[edit] Fictional character biography
Jason Philip Macendale, Jr. began as a mercenary and freelance terrorist/assassin, whose U.S. citizenship was revoked when he enlisted in a foreign army, and later became a professional criminal. His original alter ego was Jack O'Lantern. In his first appearance, he battles Machine Man.[1] He later moves to make a permanent home in the family of Spider-Man villains, after encountering Spider-Man for the first time.[2] He next tries to hijack the original Hobgoblin's battle van.[3]
Wishing to increase his underworld status, Macendale hires assassins to kill Ned Leeds (who was believed to be the original Hobgoblin at that time)[4] and takes his arsenal for himself, adopting the Hobgoblin identity.[5] Despite being the Hobgoblin, Macendale lacked the original's superpowers, and became obsessed with finding the Green Goblin's secret formula of superhuman strength, attempting to steal it from Harry Osborn, but fails as the latter did not have it at the time. [6]
During a demonic incursion on New York City, Macendale foolishly offers to sell his soul to N'astirh in exchange for the power of a demon. N'astirh refuses the offer, considering Macendale's wretched soul to be worthless to him. However, in return for amusing the demon's twisted sense of humor, N'astirh fuses a demon to Macendale anyway, just for making him laugh. [7] Eventually, he goes insane as a result of his transformation, and becomes convinced that he had been appointed by God to kill sinners. However, the two identities of Macendale and the demon fights fiercely over control of the body. Shortly thereafter, the demonic presence physically separated itself from Macendale and continued its purge of the city, calling itself the Demogoblin. Once more powerless, Macendale obtains the strength formula of Kraven the Hunter, [8] which enables him to easily defeat his demonic doppelganger. [9]
Macendale is later hired by Gaunt and further augments himself with cybernetic implants.
After being incarnated in prison, he is murdered by Roderick Kingsley, the true Hobgoblin, who had allowed Macendale his claim on the goblin "franchise" to further hide his identity as the power behind the various incarnations of the Hobgoblin. [10]

[edit] Television
Jason Philip Macendale appears in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, as the Hobgoblin, voiced by Mark Hamill. Here, there is no Roderick Kingsley and the Hobgoblin debuted before the Green Goblin, although he still uses the weapons designed by Norman Osborn. In his first appearance, Hobgoblin is hired by Norman Osborn to assassinate Wilson Fisk, but fails because of interference from Peter Parker. Hobgoblin demands that Osborn pay him more money and he will take another shot at Fisk, but Osborn refuses and fires him instead. Curious as to why Osborn wants Fisk dead, Hobgoblin snoops around inside Fisk's building, where he is captured by Fisk, whom he realizes is Kingpin, New York's most powerful crime lord. Hobgoblin manages to form a partnership with the Kingpin, and reveals that his previous employeer was Norman Osborn; much to Kingpin's displeasure, the crime lord sends Hobgoblin to kidnap Harry Osborn and use him as ransom. Hobgoblin later betrays Kingpin by returning to Norman for better weapons to defeat the Kingpin; seeking to become the new Kingpin of Crime. Hobgoblin forces the Kingpin to flee and temporarily takes over the Kingpin's empire in his absence. The story concludes with the Kingpin, Osborn, and Spider-Man all loosely allying themselves to defeat the Hobgoblin, who escapes after crash-landing into the water.During the X-Men: The Animated Series crossover, Hobgoblin blackmails Dr. Herbert Landon for money, or he would reveal Landon's real intention to exterminate all mutantkind to the public. Hobgoblin later downloads Landon's years of research on a disc (deleting the original information from Landon's computers), and wants money for it. Landon however falls into a vat of chemicals; believing him dead, Hobgoblin leaves. The Hobgoblin next appears in the second Green Goblin story arc, in which he steals a portal-creating machine called the Time Dilation Accelerator. His true identity, Jason Philip Macendale, is also revealed to the audience; Macendale is the fiancé of Felicia Hardy. The Green Goblin kidnaps both Macendale and Felicia, and takes them to OsCorp where he intends to kill them off, but Spider-Man appears and defeats him. Macendale is afterwards taken into custody. An alternate-reality version of the Hobgoblin appears in part one of the series finale, who is an ally of the Green Goblin.
[edit] Video Games
The NES game Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six had the third line-up of the Sinister Six, which included Macendale.
[edit] Toys
The demonic version of Macendale appeared in the Spider-Man Classics line. This was reworked for the Sinister Six Marvel Legends set and then repainted for the Demogoblin figure.
