[edit] I thought twice about it when I did it

I don't think linking to a half-baked (quarter-baked?) list like that improves this article in any way.

I think that was a pretty rude thing to say considering I wasn't even the one who made the page. I thought a nice link to the page that I restored would be nice because I thought cleaning up the page and giving it a nice place in Wikipedia was the thing to do. Whether "half-baked" or not, something someone else worked hard on doing does not deserve to be just left out, especially by someone as trustworthy as a Wikipedia Administrator. After all, isn't that what Wikipedia is all about; its just a bunch of amateurs building upon the work of another amateur. In the future, don't go shunning the bad pages, rather fix them up like a true administrator should.the preceding unsigned comment is by JP06035 (talk • contribs) 22:02, January 29, 2006 (UTC)

This was in reference to this edit of mine, removing a newly-inserted link to List of famous people who died of pneumonia from Pneumonia, a Featured Article. I don't mind saying that the list, as it now stands, is a terrible article. I'm glad you are trying to improve it! It isn't rude to call a bad article a bad article. (The saying at WIkipedia is comment on the edit, not the editor.) But until it's a lot better than it is now, it hurts a good article like Pneumonia to have a prominent link to it.
By the way, you should sign talk page posts by typing four tildes (~~~~)
Still, I am sorry if my terse edit summary caused hurt feelings. Like I said, I'm glad you're working to improve Wikipedia. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 22:13, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Gillette_stadium.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Gillette_stadium.JPG. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. You can get help on image copyright tagging from Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. -- Carnildo 09:57, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Naevus/ Birthmark

Sorry for reverting Birthmark. I can see that you put lots of effort into the formatting and merge. I agree that it was a horrible article as it stood. You seem to have got round to fixing the mess from the unmerge before I did. Thanks. Sorry for not getting to it faster. --Mike C | talk 02:08, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] One Away

Of course the Barker's Beauties were never men; of course, that has nothing to do with what was being discussed. The "ladies," or in the past, the "gentlemen" that the contestant asks for horns are the people in the show's sound effects booth. The line never had anything whatsoever to do with the models. 71.31.67.115 03:51, 4 February 2006 (UTC) (Steve Gavazzi)

[edit] vandalism

Please stop removing content from Wikipedia; it is considered vandalism. If you want to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you.

You have vandalised a wiki policy process. [1] [2]

--CyclePat 17:09, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia.

You have vandlised the same article again.[3] I understand it looks like awfull with all those labels. I can empathise that you are working on the article. But it is wiki procedure to keep them. The article you are working on will not be delete just like that it must go through the entire deletion process. I would say you have at least one week. If you look at the list they have to go through it may be 2 to 4 weeks before it gets reviewd for deletion. This is wiki process and I'm asking you to please respect it. --CyclePat 17:24, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Why don't you put the WP:CITE references/citations in the template instead of on the 50 odd pages. It seems like you may have found an interesting source that covers all of them. --CyclePat 17:37, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
Well... if you have a reference for all of these statistic from one source. Instead of just one source per page per fact. (ie.: adding this source to the article of 1924 http://www.olympic.org/uk/athletes/results/search_r_uk.asp )Then perhaps it may be time saving to simple incorperate the reference into the template that already happens to be on the 50 odd pages. ie.: Put you bibliorgraphy into Template:Olympic games medal count. sort of like what I did by adding the reference required, NPOV, delete, etc.
Secondly I would like to remove those anoying boxes but it goes against the principal of wikipolicy. People will give their opinion. I've seen occasions where similar information has been moved to wikisource. --CyclePat 17:49, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

I've removed the AfD notice and other nonsense from the template. Since the accurate listings are usually available on the IOC website after the event I think calling WP:CITE is pointless at this stage. But Wikipedia is not designed to cover current events (Wikinews is that way ---->). Just zis  Guy, you know? [T]/[C] 19:28, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Olympic Citations

Hey please help me out, I've got the citation for the olympic metal pages, all you do is change the year in the URL. ==References==

[edit] Total Olympics medal count

Hey Jared, there is a bit of debate on the talk page concerning the Soviet Bloc states and their medal tallies. Feel free to verse your opinion on the subject. I felt that we should continue to count Russia and the USSR as separate entities as well as with East and West Germany since they each participated separately. Another user was claiming that the list was biased toward the US, so I was just trying to explain why that isn't so. Thanks for all your assistance in helping to keep the page from deletion! --Caponer 21:17, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Sure...I'll "be right there" haha.
--Jared [T]/[C]\[P:O]/[@]\[+] 21:24, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
I totally agree that there should be a universal convention on how to list the medal tables...or else anyone can dispute the counts and risk losing the tables altogether. One convention would squelch all of these separate debates and it would be nice to make the tables more uniform. --Caponer 21:59, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion page

Hey Jared, unfortunately I'm not an administrator (yet) so I don't have the authority to clear out that discussion. I would forget about its existence because they will probably clear it automatically in the next few days now that the problems with the page in question have been remedied. Thanks for that Olympics concensus page! Hopefully this will get everything worked out and garner institutional support from admins to make it Wikilaw ;) --Caponer 00:49, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ranking used in Canada

Thank you for your message. I am not sure whether my contribution should be on the Wikipedia:Olympic_conventions page or the discussion page on the 2006 winter olympics medal count. I have no contribution for the actual ranking itself. My contribution concerned the following passage:

"The "Rank By Total" table shows the country's rank in terms of total number of medals won. For ties, the number of golds is taken into consideration next and then the number of silvers. If, after the above, countries are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically. This is the system used in the U.S. and Canada."

I believe (I'm not sure, though) that the last sentence should be changed, because Radio-Canada does not use this system, so I believe it to be possible that this system is only used in English-Canada. Should such discussion in fact be on the Olympic conventions page? Blur4760 15:01, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Olympic addons

Hello, I understand where you're coming from, but consider this. There is absolutely no reason why the information I added should be removed from Wikipedia altogether. It is iformative information, and I thought Wikipedia was about that. If it doesn't belong on that page, I suggest we come up with a compromise, but please don't remove my contributions. -- Earl Andrew - talk 19:53, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

No need to threaten me, but I am glad you've accepted my compromise. Compromise is important for Wikipedia to work, especially considering all the bureaucracy it has. -- Earl Andrew - talk 04:34, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Olympic conventions

I appreciate your creation of this page, and I think that by gathering the community of editors for Olympic pages together into one place to vote on standards that should be used in order to unite all of the topics with some basic guidelines to follow, but here are some problems that I've identified with the page, and I think that it can be drastically improved by fixing these. Please let me know what you think.

  • Lack of enumerated goals/purposes. This is the first thing that needs to be done right away. There needs to be a opening paragraph that lists exactly what the purpose of the page is. Is it there to provide suggestions for future edits? Will pages be changed to look like this if the guidelines established have not been followed? Is everything not spelled out on the page against Wikipedia policy for editing Olympics pages? There needs to be a list of exactly what the page means to editors who plan to follow it and to editors who don't follow it, and it needs to be shown how powerful the page is, whether it is official Wikipedia policy or merely suggested guidelines.
  • Bedlam. There is far too much happening on the page. It is getting difficult to tally the votes because every vote is a paragraph long, and for every vote there is a question or comment discussing it. My suggestion would be to move ALL discussion to the chat page, and on the main page only leave supportvotes, opposevotes, and neutralvotess with the voter's signature, with no discussion listed, or maybe allow one line per vote if you want.
  • Poll oversaturation. From now on new polls should have to pass some kind of test on the discussion page before being moved to the main page, and the rules for a poll moving to the main page need to be made clear. When a format is being voted on, a second, contradictory format cannot be polled at the same time until the first loses. Maybe something as simple as having a poll get a second nomination would suffice. Simple rules like this will make all of our lives easier.

There needs to be rule and order on that page if it is going to be used as a reference for editors. Please think about my suggestions and let me know if I'm out of line, or if you have more ideas, or what. Thanks. --Josilot 15:50, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

You sound like you've got things under control. My original idea was to have a purpose/goals section on the front page and then a closed poll summary (which doesn't exist yet) and then a list of open polls after that, with just support, oppose, or neutral, and signature of each person. From that point, all that's left to fix is the talk page with what is allowed. As far as discussion, pretty much anything should be allowed. And have a separate nomination for new polls section maybe. I have no idea how to format everything the best way. Maybe each poll on the main page should link to it's appropriate section on the talk page? I don't know.--Josilot 22:15, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Here is what I had in mind for the polls on the main page: User:Josilot/Sandbox. You can do it as you see fit, but to reduce confusion you should copy all the votes from the previous polling to the main page where applicable. I'm not sure that voting should be reopened until this has been done, to completely remove confusion.--Josilot 00:01, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Please don't be mad at me, but it was too confusing to have people voting on both pages or either page or whatever they wanted. I moved all of the voting to the talk page. The project page can be used to summarize the outcomes of the votes.--Josilot 03:07, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Votingtemplates

Hello, I noticed that you created this template, and several sub templates. While this is the system used on Commons, you should be aware that the English Wikipedia has decided that such templates should not be used. You can see the original deletion debate here. As recreations of an already deleted template, your ones could, in theory, be speedy deleted by any admin. - SimonP 18:22, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Since you asked for a response from me for what do to about this, the easy way to make this not a problem would be to edit the five templates and remove the images, which should remove every use of the images on that page, which I believe should conform to SimonP's bit of information. I'm gonna think about your other questions for a little bit before coming up with what I think the plan should be.--Josilot 21:57, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Intros to Olympic articles

Jared,

Thanks for your response at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Sports_Olympics#Intro_to_Olympics_articles. I agree that there doesn't need to be a lot of debate, I just figured I'd start a conversation so I have something to cite in my edit summaries when I'm making lots of changes. I figure I'll put something like this in my edit summaries:

convert to a more detailed version per Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Sports_Olympics#Intro_to_Olympics_articles

If you'd like to help, feel free! I'm probably going to start at the 2010 Winter Olympics and work my way backwards in time, so if you wanted to start at 1924 Winter Olympics and meet somewhere in the middle, that would be great. I'll probably just keep working until it's done (and I'll double check that all of the summer Olympics are in the same format).

Thanks again for your comments, and have a good day! EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 01:01, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Good job on the Winter Olympics. Looks like we met somewhere around 1952. Glancing at the summer articles, it looks like a good 30% of those need to be changed as well. Feel free to browse through those and do the same changes. EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 01:25, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, great working with you too. I updated the thread at the WikiProject talk page, and I don't anticipate anyone will have any problem with it. Thanks again for all your help, and feel free to message me at any time. EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 01:51, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ladies vs women

In this case the "Wikipedia community" simply decided the wrong thing. It seems to me obvious that in all cases the right thing is to use the official terminology for each sport in the Olympic programme. The official rules of figure skating are that "ladies" is the correct name of the event, and that is what it was officially called at the Games. Maybe you should have consulted someone from the figure skating community before you arbitrarily decided to attach the wrong terminology to our sport? I wasn't even aware that there was any ongoing discussion on the issue before someone started messing with the figure skating article, and I still haven't been able to find a pointer to the page recording *where* it was discussed. [edit] Sockpuppet template

Hello Jared. I have blocked him for a short time for vandalizing one of your pages. However if he's being checked for sockpuppets anyways it isn't necessary for him to have a sockpuppet template on his page. It's a good idea to keep evidence of his sockpuppets though. Until then I can not force him to keep that tag on his page. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 23:23, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wintermetal's antics.

Hi Jared, I don't know if you have seen my latest comments here. I hope I wasn't too rude. I see Wintermetal was blocked for vandalism which is good. I do hope his antics be reigned in somewhat because I do fear these tiresome discussions with him will eventually drive good contributors away from the Olympics pages. I decided to check out the pages after following the Turin games with the hopes of making usefull contributions (I'm an Olympics buff of sorts and I'd be most interested of filling in some blanks and adding medals tables to pages that don't have them yet) but it's hard to get around to doing it right now. Anyways, thanks for all your hard work on the Olympics conventions pages and other Olympics related stuff and keep up the good work.--Kalsermar 01:14, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

The problem with rooting out sock puppetry is that sometimes people share a common IP address when they live together. I share an IP address with my roommates who also contribute so our votes were all called into question on various voting pages. --Caponer 01:13, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Great Britain vs. Great Britain and Northern Ireland

It doesn't matter what constitutes the UK and what the country is made up of. I'm well aware that Northern Ireland is part of the UK. That's completely beside the point though. They call themselves Great Britain in the Olympics. Their official name, as given by their NOC and confirmed by the IOC, is Great Britain. If you guys have a problem with that, you should contact the NOC and suggest they change their name, not fill Wikipedia with erroneous data. I'm changing it back. Please leave it be. [edit] Template:Supportvote

I've deleted Template:Supportvote again since it has been voted on not just once but twice. It's recreation has also been considered a speedy deletion recently so do not create it. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 09:31, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

I myself don't see the big deal with having them; they're actually quite useful and don't take up as much page room as if you actually wrote it all out in script. But that's what I just did. You mentioned that my signature contains unpaired
tags, but I cannot find any div tags at all. In fact, I can't find any unpiared tags. I give you my permission to go into User:JP06035/signature and fix the problem if you specifically know what it is, or atleast better direct me to the problem. Thanks for your concern! J@redtalk+ ubx  13:10, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Well the sig you show above is not what appeared on my talk page under your RfA thank-you template. That's where the unpaired div showed, causing all following text to align right. I don't see that your current sig has this problem; maybe it's in your private template.

But as long as we're on the subject of sigs: Do you ever look at yours in markup? I count seven full-width edit box lines -- and I have a big monitor. I'm all for expressive sigs, if that's what people like to do; but when I'm inserting a comment in a crowded talk page I sometimes get peeved just trying to sort out editors' sigs from whatever they might have to say. John Reid 13:30, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Oh, OK. I wasn't sure which you were talking about. Thanks though. Regarding my current one, I see where you're coming from; sometimes I, too, find it difficult tosee where comments end and sigs start. I do however like that wikipedia allows users to "express themselves" (to a point) by making their own signature. I may have gone a little overboard, though (I didn't realize it was 7 lines!), so I'll put it on my to-do list to fix it up. J@redtalk+ ubx  13:38, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello Jared. Commisarations on the RfA, it was a bit early, but it will definitely succeed next time, and I will be supporting of course. I noticed you have fixed up all the confusing links on the FINA and Swimming World Championships. I wonder if you think it would be worthwhile starting up a WikiProject for Swimming at all, because there a few things which need to be organized, and there MAY be a few regulars around who want to also participate in this. (My swimming related edits are also at User:Blnguyen/AusSport as well as my general userpage). Also I have created Portal:Swimming, and I would like some input into this as my understanding of Swimming is rather Australian-centred (wrt Long Course metres events), so feel free to suggest improvements, or simply jump in and add a more global perspective. [edit] Olympic rings picture

Well, my reasoning is simple: the one that's on commons (Olympic flag.png) is going to get deleted from Commons. Perhaps what I should do is upload the one from commons as a 3rd image on Wikipedia, and replace both with that one. Anyways, the AWB doing something wrong is my fault. I'll be sure to correct the changes. —MESSEDROCKER (talk) 12:02, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, the one I was working to replace was on Commons, and it had an inappropriate license so it was deleted. However, the one that is being used is on Wikipedia, so it can still be used. Since t's close enough, we can use it for now. HOWEVER, it would be absolutely fantastic if you can find a better version of the image (SVG, of course) and upload it in place of what we have now. —MESSEDROCKER (talk) 20:39, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your input is requested on an AfD

Hi Jared, User:Medalstats has been pushing his POV again, this time on an article he created. Please refer to Olympic Medal Statistics: Medal Count Winners, which I nominated for AfD. It might be appropriate to put this up for review on the Olympics portal so the members there are aware of it as well.--Kalsermar 16:42, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I checked WP:CHECK and went into the archives and apparently it was closed as stale which I presume means his sockpuppets weren't active anymore and/or the controversial edits had stopped.--Kalsermar 20:55, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Answer

Well, yes I live in Paris. My mother tongue is French and I can more or less speak in English. That's all when it goes about the language I speak. What about you ? Metropolitan 01:27, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your answer, even if I'm not sure what I should think about it because of the april fool ! ;-)
About the nomination as featured list of the tallest structures in Paris article, do you know if I'm allowed to support it ? If I ask the question, it's probably because my opinion can be considered as biased. Metropolitan 01:30, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Quick subsidiary question. While checking recent edits in History, when I click on "diff" or "hist", a pop-up appears to ask me to download some php stuff... however, the downloaded stuff can't be read by my puter. It's only once logged out that those pages appear on my browser. That's rather annoying since I have always to log out in order to check edits. Do you know if there's any way to solve the issue ? Thanks a lot. I'll let you know once there is another bunch of new state highway articles created. Do you happen to have the official specs for these highway shields? Polaron 20:24, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Olympic Games

Hi Jared! While reverting a newbie test on this page, I noticed the last paragraph of Olympic_Games#Olympic_champions_and_medalists. It first caught my eye because it gave a rhetorical question to the reader, but after looking at it for a while, I think it needs to be cleaned up or rewritten completely. However, I wanted to get a second editor's opinion, and figured sending you a direct message would get faster results than posting on that article's talk page. Any thoughts/attempts at rewriting? (Don't worry about my input- if you think of something good to put there, be bold and do it. :o) ) EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 05:42, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I realize you may be on break already, but I've taken a crack at cleaning up/reorganizing the end of that section, and I'd love to hear your input. Thanks again, and have a good Wikibreak. EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 17:02, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your monobook.js

I randomly happened across your note in User_talk:Danny#Asking a favor... and just thought I'd mention that you may need to clear your cache for your monobook.js changes to work properly. Simply shift-click on the refresh button (works in mozilla at least), and that might fix your problem. Shift clicking also seems to fix the problem where links spontaneously become underlined... but that's another story. If the problem you're having is completely unrelated, then don't mind me. Cowman109Talk 02:37, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your response to my question. Yes, I tried shift-clicking, but that doesn't seem to work. It works every other time, though. The reason I can tell there is something screwy going on is that those two initial slashes are not in the <pre> box, and the following message is not included like it is on the rest of the monobooks:
Note: After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. Mozilla/Safari/Konqueror: hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R), IE: press Ctrl-F5, Opera: press F5.

[edit] beijing olympics

Hi. I was just creating a heading for the venues to be at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, using the 2006 page as a guideline, when I saw the map you created for the Turin venues. I've noticed that you are great at mapmaking, and I'd like to know if you'd be interested in creating a map for these games too. A nice map showing the locations of all the venues (just mouse over the yellow dots) is located here. If you could, put the name of the venue, possible a sports symbol, whatever. It'd be your map, and you don't have to do it if you don't care to. Thanks for at least reading this, though. Please send me a message when you can. Regards, J@red  23:43, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I think you made an error

I rm'd some content from the Ten Commandments article...content that has been removed several times already today. The additions seem valid but, where this article is constantly used as a soapbox, new lengthy edits such as that one have been cleaned when no citations have been included and/or "Original research" seems previlent(as in this case). None of the other editors that have removed the same content have been given vandal warnings. I included very clear reasons in the edit summary. Perhaps when you get the chance you will clear the warning from my talk page for me. I won't bother rv'ing your mistake with regards to the article itself as I do not like edit wars. I'll leave that up to you to do so if you wish. Thank you 216.21.150.44 00:12, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for clearing that for me. VandalProof is a very good tool. I've read the docs on it. Very convenient for rv'ing and issuing warnings all in one swoop. [edit] Brackets templates.

Hey! Great job on the bracket templates! I was just trying to see if I could help, so I was looking at the 2004 tennis games and saw that there were two places that had rounds of 64-- making it a 6 round bracket. I was wondering if you had the time and it's not too hard if you could create the Template:6RoundBracket template. Thanks and good work. J@red  03:04, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! 6 round bracket, eh... I've found the 5 round one typically pushes the limits of screen width, and had pretty much been planning to use two 5-rounds and a separate "final" matchup to do rounds of 64. I'll see what I can do about a 6-rounder though. -- Jonel | Speak 00:01, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi. (Sorry, I don't speak German.) About a year ago, you recorded this sound clip. When you recorded it, though, you left out the "Hardenne" part of her last name.If it wouldn't be a bother to you, could you re-record the sound clip to include this? I would do it, but I don't have a microphone. Thanks! J@red 16 jun 2006 14:32 (CEST) <-- That's my English Account.

I also do not speak German. I have left out the "Hardenne"-part because that is not here name. It is the name of here husband. I know that in some country's a wife's lose there name when the are maried. But not in Belgium. The only way to change your name is my following a special legal procedure. Here legal name is Justine Henin.
If you really like it I am willing to record a new version with Hardenne included. But I would prefer not to do it. The idea of those recordings is so you can hear how a name is pronounced by a native. She is French speaking. I am Dutch speaking. But because I am living in Belgium , Brussels I can pronounce it a lot better then let say an American. I am sure that the current recording has the correct pronunciation. But I am not confident that I can pronounce Herdenne exactly like it should be. Greetings, --Walter 19:28, 16 June 2006 (UTC) (responds here is fine)

There are 28 talk archive pages for the 2005 season which is too much trouble to search through. All I can say is that I believe this has been discussed before and the general agreement was to leave the image out, because there was not an image on the 2005 page until we got the track map. If you really want an image there, you can make your argument and draw people to your side on the 2006 talk page... if you want to. --tomf688 (talk - email) 17:43, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
You know, I really don't want to make a big deal. Personally, I thought an image would look nice there because it is so blank. Almost all ofther infoboxes like this contain an image, even if it will be replaced later with a permanent one. I'm not going to fight to make it this way, though, becuase frankly it's foolish. [edit] Removal of the olympic rings from pages.

Hey, Jonel. I see you have been removing this image from many pages. I think that you've gone too far on the following pages, though: Template:Olympic games medal count and Portal:Olympics. The former is placed and only viewed on main pages, which is a perfectly fine place to put fair use images. Why, then, is it wrong to have this image on the template that is on an encyclopedic page? The latter is also encyclopedic, and contains information that is supplemented by the image. Could you lead me to the place where it says fair use images can only be put on main space pages? Thanks. I know you mean well. JARED(t)  20:21, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Fair_use#Policy, #9. Fair use images should be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are often enough not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages. -- Jonel | Speak 21:18, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] List of tallest buildings and structures in Paris

Thanks for you intervention at Talk:List of tallest buildings and structures in Paris. Common sense is really needed there. If you're interested, you can also have a look at Talk:Île-de-France (région) and comment. The same user, ThePromenader, has removed the following sentence from the introduction of the article: "Its territory corresponds for the most part to the metropolitan area of Paris.", and he removed it for about the same rigid reasons that he wants to change the title of List of tallest buildings and structures in Paris. It's very hard to reach any sort of compromise with this guy, and despite being told by both User:Metropolitan and I on the Île-de-France talk page that the sentence should remain in the introduction, he removed it nonetheless. Have a look. Your input there would be appreciated. Hardouin 18:33, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Greetings from Paris

Hello Jared.

I'm sorry for my strictness, but it's important to remain true to reference here. Paris is unlike many of the world's metropoles, that is to say it is quite administratively separated from its suburbs - this is a real problem for city-suburb relations. All suburban communes have their own administrations, and have often even pride in their quite distinct identity - communes have been around since 1790. These make a large part of the reason that nothing outside Paris is called "Paris" - a situation quite peculiar, I agree, but one you can find in most every reference you look at. You will not find "Courbevoie" under "Paris" - actually, you'll have more chance of finding "La Défense" under "Courbevoie" than "Paris". Since this is supposed to be an encyclopedia, it is important to stick to referenced fact and not rely on greater ignorance - this is the "big deal" with this. Although many theories have been "explained" by certain contributors (Paris is bigger than Paris), nothing has ever been proven in this regard - and there is very good and obvious reason for this.

Just a word of explanation for my stance on this matter, but thanks for your input.

Regards,

THEPROMENADER 19:17, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

I also appologize if I seemed too rude, but maybe it is because I am not a native Parisian. I sort of see where you're coming from, but I don't understand how Paris would not have somewhat of a metropolitan area. Anyhow, I know you live in Paris and know more about it than I do, so I'd like to leave this matter to people who know more about the city...like you and User:Metropolitan.

I appreciate your trying to clarify your view for me. JARED(t)  19:23, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Hey, I appreciate your unexpected (and unneeded!) apology - and trust me I do know where you are coming from. But today Paris is in a situation that many would like to see changed - distant relation with its suburbs - but a few here insist on pretending that they have changed already. This is far from factual, so I hope you see reason in this - just think of me next time you have an encyclopedia open : ) I'm sorry also that some of my vehemence may have bled onto you - this is an argument that has been going on quite some time.
Take care, and no doubt see you around,
THEPROMENADER 19:41, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Jared, don't be fooled by ThePromenader here. First let me warn you that the guy is Canadian and has lived in Paris for only about 10 years, and yet he believes he's an authority on Paris. Unfortunately, his many misguided and erroneous edits show his not so good knowledge of Paris. One example: the Paris article, in its Administration section, asserts that (I quote) "Although Paris' history is long, that of its municipal government has less than half a century: Paris and its surrounding territories were always governed directly by the highest power of the time: this was the Crown before the French Revolution, and a state-appointed préfet (governing the Seine département) afterwards." This bit was written by ThePromenader, and it is completely wrong. There existed a municipality of Paris from the 13th century until the French Revolution, but ThePromenader doesn't seem to know that. I already told him to correct that bit, but as you can see it is still standing uncorrected. The fact that people would write erroneous things about subjects that they are not very familiar with is beyond my understanding.
Then, there is the nice slant written above, trying to persuade you that nothing outside of Paris is called Paris, that the City of Paris is strictly separated from its surburbs, and so forth. This is of course for the most part wrong. There exist many metropolitan structures (encompassing the City of Paris and the suburbs) that manage such things as public transportation, fire rescue, or garbage collection. Then there is also the administrative région of Île-de-France whose territory for the most part corresponds to the metro area of Paris and which has all the communes (including the City of Paris) working together for metropolitan projects. Of course, Promenader didn't tell you any of this. I can only suggest again having a look at Talk:Île-de-France (région). Hardouin 19:56, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Actually I've lived here since 1989. Although he I guess was born here, the funny thing with this guy is that he can't find one reference supporting his "Paris is bigger than Paris" claims - not one. If you look at the "tallest structures" talk page again you'll see that I've left several, and official ones to boot. This is indeed much ado about nothing, and a big waste of everyone's time. Fact is there for the taking - for those who want it. Sorry for the mess : ) THEPROMENADER 20:20, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article moved against consensus

Jared, can you have a look at List of tallest buildings and structures in Paris? User:ThePromenader moved the article to "List of tallest buildings and structures in Île-de-France" although there is clearly no consensus on the talk page to move the article. I moved the article back to its original title. I am afraid that Promenader is going to move it back to Île-de-France. Can you have a look? Thanks. Hardouin 13:13, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Actually you may note that the motion to move the page to "Paris region" failed, but that to move it to "Île-de-France" won albeit by a narrow margin. I left this vote for seven days but only one opposed the move - guess who.
The page has been blocked by an admin so no worries for you - but come by for a look if it interests you. Thanks. THEPROMENADER 14:46, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Connecticut Highway Signs

How are you making these images? (For example, ) I'd like to add them to the interchange listings on Interstate 395 (Connecticut). You just say "Made from existing images."

I'm looking for something similar to the other New England state route signs where you can basically put any number in an image, a la , , or . I notice anything over in Connecticut doesn't have a sign image.

Thanks! Tckma 17:32, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Picture on Portal:Olympics/Selected athlete

Jared,

I'm going to be removing the picture from Portal:Olympics/Selected athlete. The picture is a copyright violation. At best, it may come in under fair use, but that means it's not allowed on the portal page. --Sue Anne 21:19, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for doing that. I know its important to keep up the search for fair use pictures in non-mainspace pages. The problem, I think, with keeping up an Olympic Portal is that the choice of images is very slim, almost to none. Just about all of them are fair use, which is a bother, I know, but we can't really do anything about it. Oh Well. Thanks for being a good wikipedian! And letting me know! [edit] Aquatics v. Swimming/Schronized Swimming/Waterpolo/Diving

Hey Jonel,

I was recently doing some edits to the 2008 summer page and I was going through the sports when I realized that the only sport that isn't listed is Aquatics, rather, its disciplines are listed. I've noticed this all along but havn't really made anything of it until now. It seems that the 4 disciplines are not grouped together into one page, like Volleyball at the 2004 Summer Olympics (Beach and indoor). Instead, they have their own pages. Why is this? Is this just something that we have just gone along with and never changed? If it has to do with the size of the page, obviously Athletics would be just as big if not bigger. And that's what subpages are for anyway.

So what do you think? I know you've been on the project longer than I have so I figured I'd ask you, the veteran of the Olympic WP pages! I think that they should be merged into one page, [[Aquatics at the ____ Olympics]], so that every sport is consistant. From there, we can have more subpages, but I think that a consistancy would be nice. With a mix, it just doesn't seem right. Anyway, respond when you can. Thanks. JARED(t)  14:48, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey Jared. The mixed treatment of sports and disciplines is essentially a historical relic; it's simply the way things have been done and no one has made the effort to change it. Consistency would be good, but with the wonderful things called "redirects" the page location is not a big priority for me. If you want to undertake changing things, please go ahead. My preference would be to have pages for each discipline (that is, breaking out the two disciplines of "Volleyball" and "Beach volleyball" from the single page) rather than agglomerating. An "Aquatics at the xxxx Summer Olympics" page would be more of a disambiguation page than anything else, pointing to the various pages on disciplines. The same would be true for Canoe/Kayak, Gymnastics, Volleyball, etc. But again, my priorities are 1) people can find what they're looking for; 2) consistency; 3) disciplines rather than sports. #1 is satisfied with the current arrangement, beyond that I care less. -- Jonel | Speak 15:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I definitely think that there should be pages for each discipline, but I think the main pages should be the actual sport that is falls under. So for now, I'll set up the 2008 page so that Aquatics is just a brief "This is what's happening under the sport of aquatics" and just go right into subpages for each. That way it'll be consistant, but still have what has been there for a while. Then maybe I'll go into existing pages and see what I can do. JARED(t)   15:57, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Hi Jared & Jonel, please allow me to offer my opinion here. The definition of a "discipline" is based on the governing sports federation. For example, FINA covers all the aquatics disciplines, so that's why the IOC calls it a single sport. Sometimes, this definition seems weird. For example, FIS governs all the skiing disciplines — but not biathlon. I think most people would consider biathlon and cross-country skiing as closer than alpine skiing and cross-country, yet it is alpine and cross-country that are both part of "one sport". How about the sliding events — the bobsled federation covers skeleton, but luge has it's own federation, so there are actually two sliding "sports" instead of one (or three) as you might expect.
Anyway, my point is that I strongly believe that a "one size fits all" policy of how we handle sports & disciplines on Wikipedia is bound to result in some goofiness. Some disciplines are quite "large" and deserve their own treatment. Some are just 1-2 events, and can be covered together. For example, I see no value in a "Skating at the 2010 Winter Olympics" page as a portal to such diverse disciplines as figure skating and speed skating. Figure skating and speed skating ought to be explicitely identified on the navigation box, and other places where a list of sports is mentioned. That's what people are going to look for, and a pedantically-correct structure within Wikipedia that puts those sports one level beneath the "Skating" heading will be confusing. Similarly, the four aquatics disciplines all should be on the {{EventsAt2008SummerOlympics}}. People are going to look for Swimming, Diving, etc. and I am certain that some will be confused by having to go through Aquatics first.
On the other hand, should it seem like I'm arguing the point about breaking every discipline out to the same level, I think all 4 cycling disciplines can easily be handled by a single Cycling at the 2008 Summer Olympics "portal" to individual events, as should the 3 disciplines of Gymnastics at the 2008 Summer Olympics. I don't want to see the navigation box expanded so that trampoline, BMX cycling, slalom canoeing, beach volleyball etc. are all listed at the same level as the "full" sports.
Note that I'm not suggesting that we delete Aquatics at the 2008 Summer Olympics — it is useful as now written. It makes a perfect spot to explain what "aquatics" is, explain the FINA linkage, etc. I did something similar for Nordic skiing at the 1964 Winter Olympics (for example). But it is a secondary article, so fans of specific sports like ski jumping and cross-country can use their respective navigation structures that we're established.
To summarize — I think we actually got it right for 2004, and I wouldn't revamp that whole structure for 2008. I hope you see my points! Andrwsc 02:35, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] About User:2005

I see that you've had trouble with this User:2005 in the past. Lately he has been disrupting me as well. His main behavioral problem is that he is an unscrupulous editor, who does not think about others before editing, reverting, or deleting their work. [edit] Tallest structures - "Paris area"

A few of us have managed to come into agreement over an "in the Paris area" title - as a former participant in the discussion, your views and vote on the matter would much be welcome at Talk:List of tallest buildings and structures in Paris. Thank you. THEPROMENADER 17:43, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your vote, but one thing to note: "Paris" does not signify any "greater Paris area" - to both locals and reference. Textbook definition of a place is important here, as the article is an explicit "list of X in X". Also, you'll find that, contrary to what you said in your vote, no other "list of x in x" article has an incorrect title - objects are either within the space indicated, or have a secondary and quite separate list for notable structures in the vicinity. Were this applied to the "in Paris" article, you would have a "secondary list" that is 70% of the article.
You can refer to Tallest buildings in New York City, List of tallest buildings and structures in London (remember the all-too real administrative "Greater London" is known even officially as "London"), List of tallest buildings in Chicago. If you would like to see "bigger than textbook definition" solutions, I can cite Category:Chicago area expressways and Boston-area streetcar lines. Please reconsider your vote - thanks. [edit] Olympic Games logos

Hi there...

I came across this list of images that are marked as fair use but are not currently used in any articles (execpt boxing and wrestling). Instead of just marking all for deletion under orphaned fair use, I thought I would give you a chance to make use of them. I am sure they will have a use later, but as of now, they are orphans. If there are any questions, please let me know on my talk page.--Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr.) 22:22, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I brought this to you because they are ophaned and copyrighted, as such, they are elegible to be deleted. You could create stubs for them, another option is to create a page in your sandbox and load them there. A final optionis to load them into WPCommons.--Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr.) 02:06, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] {{Olympic Games}}

Tom, I was just going to fix up that Olympics template myself. I went to press preview, and you had already made the changes. That's funny. JARED(t)  12:47, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Great minds think alike :-) Glad you like it. Tompw 12:55, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I just fixed that template up using Template:navigation, which I think looks better. I used your edits as a jumping off point. I like how I did the "rings" with the five links. It looks good, right? Anyway, edit it at your will, I just thought the nav. temp would make it more uniform. Thanks for getting me started! JARED(t)  13:08, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
There a few problems with {{Navigation}}... firstly, it insists on making the body conmtents "small", which causes accessability problems. (I strongly belive that WP is for evryone, including those with inperfect eyesight. If the small font size was so wonderful, we'd have everything in WP in it... but I digress). Secondly, it has to be full width, which is not needed (the Olympic Games template requires five lines either way, and looks all strung out in tehfull width versio). Thirdly, you can't set the header bar colour... I'm assumeing someone set that for a reason, so I like to be able to keep it.
That said, I really like that five rings/colours bit at the top :-) . I've kept that, but gone back to Tnavbar-header (which is so widely used it canalso be considered standard). Tompw 13:21, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I think I was the one who came up with those colors. I had originally planned to have colors for each set of games (see User:JP06035/sandbox3) but that was too obnoxious. That said, the colors can stay or they can go. It doesn't matter to me. And I do see your point. It looks almost exactly the same anyway. JARED(t)  13:35, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Olympic results section test

Hi Jared, the test looks good! I think we need to get section editing sorted out before this goes "live". Expecially on large pages like that, editors will typically work on a sport at a time, and it's almost impossible to scroll through the full page results to find the right spot. But it's getting closer!! Andrwsc 17:18, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I think so, too. But I still have no idea about how to go about doing it. JARED(t)  18:35, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I've got something that might be workable. (User:Andrwsc/Test) I had to split the template into two parts, one for the pictogram rendering and another for the section wrapper. (We'd probably want to wrap the div/div stuff into a "section end" template too.) That puts the edit button and the hide/show button on different lines. At first glance, not using a single template might look inelegant, but there are some benefits. First, on pages where a nation only has a handful of athletes, we can still use the pictogram header but it would be overkill to use the hide/show sections. Second, it provides an opportunity for some narrative text to appear outside of the hidden results section. This might be good for a casual reader scanning the article without having to hit show/hide on each section. What do you think? Andrwsc 20:22, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Brilliant! Haha. It's great. Because we really wouldn't want the whole sections hidden, we'd want the introductory text. I've actually gotta go now, so if you do anything extra, just infer what I'd say or do. Have a good day! JARED(t)  20:41, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:B5 band.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:B5 band.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] 3RR warning for 2006 Atlantic hurricane season

Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Rather than reverting, discuss disputed changes on the talk page. The revision you want is not going to be implemented by edit warring. Thank you. As for the particular edit, Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, so we cannot speculate on whether names will be retired or not. A statement that "inactivity will certainly play a role" in the decision or that inactivity will reduce the chances of names being retired is still speculative, because a name or names may still be retired. I left the warning because you were closer to violating 3RR than he was. If he reverts on the main page again, he'll also get a warning. --Coredesat 03:07, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The bell ringing needs to be more prominent

I did mention something under controversy. I think a section about bell ringing, including objections to it on the basis of causing severe pain to a large number of people, are an important aspect of the Salvation Army.

On Friday, I was unable to move because of the amount of pain being caused. The person with the bell just laughed at me. They are sadistic. If it wasn't for a good samaritan knocking over the kettle, I would have been frozen in pain for a good long time, holding my ears and hoping against hope that the sadistic bastard with the sonic assault weapon would stop.; —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lochlyn.Christante (talkcontribs) 02:07, 18 December 2006 (UTC).

OK, it's done. Convenient as it would be, WP:RM people aren't mind readers; it's not obvious whether you intended it as a noncontroversial proposal or as a discussion proposal that you unintentionally listed in the wrong section. [edit] Re:Panoramas

Hi Jared,
Yeah the (relative) success of my panorams is due to decent stitching software - w/o you don't have a chance to get a good panorama. I use Arcsoft Panorama 4 which is a really easy to use program which gives decent results. However for a more advance one (bit more expensive but probably better for advanced users than Arcsoft) Panorama Factory is quite good. Diliff I know relies on PTGUI which I think is quite good but I've never got the hang of - it would be well worth you talking to him as he is far better at panoramic work then me. However a good start to a good panorama is to use a tripod where possible. If not lock your elbows in close to your body and rotate around on your hips. Not having the ability to lock exposure is a bit of a problem, but Panorama Maker usually can blend differently exposed images fairly well (as long as they are not too different). Good luck! --Fir0002 22:37, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Panoramas

I use a few specific techniques to maximise the quality of panoramas. Firstly, I do use exposure and white balance lock on the individual photos to minimise the differences between frames. Also, a good stitching program is pretty essential (I use a program called PTGui which isn't free, but I've heard that autopano is also good and free, haven't tried it though). Without this, even with the best technique, it will be quite time consuming the results won't be much good. It is still possible to take panoramas without full manual control but you are far more limited in what you can do. Its hard to be more specific though as each scene is different and there are different tricks in different circumstances. Hope that helps, sorry I've taken so long to reply. [edit] Your RfA

Hello! I respectfully suggest that you now withdraw your RfA, as the 'oppose' opinions are now quite clear that you require substantial amounts of admin-related experience before you can be considered as a useful administrator here. This doesn't say anything about your usefulness as an editor, which is not in doubt at all. I recommend that you take the advice to heart and work hard on implementing it over the next three or four months before considering reapplying for adminship. Regards, (aeropagitica) 17:26, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

It's a pity you withdrew too early because I intended to support you (I need time to see your contributions). Just forget it and begin a new approach. If you nominate the 3rd time, I'd be pleased to support you. You are a good editor, but you should do something to make others think you can be a good admin, too. In fact, I like a type of admin like you: frankly stating your opinion (though it's not good for admin thing), give answers from what you think (not the kind of factitiously formula-based ones that I often see at RfA). I also like you because you contribute many to main articles instead of "those are in areas that require admin action.....admin tools at this point". Of course, if you want to be an admin, you must meet their requirement and my sole vote can't help you all. Lastly, try your best and I think one day you will be successful. Cheers! I don't agree with you about your opinion on Bush. Causesobad --> Talk) 07:31, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
Why do you have the intention of "pulling out"? Believe me, just exert yourself and you'll be paid off. Don't give in so easily. I have some advice for you. Begin from now:

1. Visit 'admin areas' more frequently: WP:RFAR; WP:CHU; AN; WP:ANI; WP:DRV; WP:AFD; WP:MFD etc. (all the things that they call "admin tools). Try to put your name there as regularly as possible and they will think you are very active and you have penetrated every policy of Wiki (although in fact you may deeply seize the rules without having to appear everywhere).
2. Keep calm (as cool as a cucumber) and select your words thoroughly in each debate (become an admin also means that you are limited in expressing your opinion), or they will delve out a smallest word you had said (which you may have forgotten) to analyze it and conclude that you aren't fitted for adminship (do you understand what I mean?) without regarding all your attempts before.
3. Try to reduce your signature (^_^), or they will make it a fine reason to oppose you.
4. Increase your edit count.
5. Make good relationship with some 'reputable' ones (if you can).

These ones I got from one of my friends who want to be an admin. I myself never want the admin thing so I don't make use of much from the advice. Last but not least, I hope that you won't give in, chance won't never close to the person who tries his best. Causesobad --> Talk) 08:55, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Oops, I forget one thing: 6. You should cite some Wiki rules or policy in your writing as frequently as possible, which shows you thorough grasp of them. (eg: this quotion I get from my talk page: "In the future, if you want comments and other users viewpoints, do not immediately resort to WP:AFD. We have a lot of dispute resolution systems in place, you can learn about them at WP:DR. For your purposes, WP:RFC would have worked just fine". That's it!!). Ahh, about Bush thing, I said that I don't agree with you about your comment on your user page that "I think President Bush is doing and has done a fine job as leader of my country." You might like to look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Ramone_and_Frunkis which contains a post which I *suspect* has been edited (deliberately or not) to make it appear you said something you did not. The post currently reads: "* Delete. The page has been poorly put together and is only one sentence long. However it should be noted that Ramone and Frunkis is and has been mentioned numerous times and while you may not google search the show and find other references, it should be noted that Wikipedia puts the issue to the forefront regarding its existence or non existence and its mention on CNBC which is not disputed. Google hits: 10. Hey, I just saw your request for semi protection of the Super Bowl article. While you're at it, you might wanna protect the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears as well. I was thinking of doing it later today, but if the admins decide to grant your request, it would be a good idea to keep vandals from screwing with the two teams articles if they win/lose.

On a completely unrelated note, it's good to see another person from Connecticut here. ^_^ dposse 14:07, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Signpost

Right now, there are two specific positions I'm looking to fill:

  • Features and admins- Compiling all the promoted administrators, articles, pictures, sounds, topics, portals, etc. It sounds like a tough job, but once you get the hang of it, it'll only take 20-30 minutes. See this week's Features and admins for an example of what you'd have to do.
  • In the news- This position will take a little more time. It basically means following news stories about Wikipedia, and reporting on them (not just articles that cite Wikipedia, because there are too many of those to get anything useful). See this week's In the news for an example (although I'd really prefer the article to be longer than that, I had to publish a short version this week due to time).

However, what I'd really like most is a couple reporters to just fill in the cracks, reporting on things that don't fit into one of our features (things like Michael Snow's report on Wikipedia traffic from Google, and Sam Blacketer's report on the furor over Wikipedia:Wikipedia is failing). If they're big enough for a full story, they get one; if you can only make a paragraph's worth of copy out of it, you can move it into the News and notes report, which covers all the small stories. Most of these stories can be easily taken by reading Foundation-l and WikiEN-l mailing lists. Also, if I see a story worth covering, I'll leave a note in the newsroom about it, under "special stories". If you do decide that you want to write about a story, just make a note that you'll take care of that particular story.

All stories are due around 17:00 UTC every Monday. If you'd like to take a stab at it, that'd be great; let me know if you have any further questions, or if you need help with your story. I'm not around much on the weekends, but I'll try to keep an eye on my talk page. Ral315 » 17:32, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. On the weeks you have time, just check in on the newsroom if you find something you'd like to do, or take one of the stories I put up for grabs there. Thanks a lot for volunteering. Ral315 » 00:35, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
I removed {{cquote}} and added the quotes in plaintext; with the graphic on the right side of the screen, cquote often looks weird for multiple quotes. For long quotes, {{quote}} works fine, but plaintext is usually the best. Other than that, I'd say the article's great. If you want to make it easier on yourself, it's not necessary to poll administrators on the issue; if there's any on-wiki discussion that you can crib quotes from, that's perfectly fine with me. I just wanted to show you my suggestion for the image position. Since the boxes are all (I'm guessing here, if they have both genders) 5 columns wide, we could reserve the first column, on the header, for the image, and the remaining four for the title. Like this ------------>

[edit] Re: AWB assessment

Once you have the *.zip file downloaded, extract its contents to your AWB directory (probably C:\Program Files\AutoWikiBrowser if you're using windows). Then copy the two *.dll files from the zip file's ".\Plugins\Kingbotk (WikiProject tagging)" directory to the AWB root directory (C:\Program Files\AutoWikiBrowser). That's all it takes to install.

When you start up AWB, there should be a new "Plugins" drop-down on the top menu bar. It has a list of supported WikiProjects, if you're not tagging for one of the WikiProjects listed, then use "Add Generic Template" to set it up. Once that's done, there will be a tab for your WikiProject on the panel next to the "make list" panel. You set the WikiProject template name and parameters there. Then look at the "Plugin" tab and click "Manually assess" at the bottom to start assessing. Everything else (making the list and whatnot) works the same.

Be sure to save your settings before you quit AWB, so you won't have to set it up again. If you have any problems, just ask at User talk:Kingbotk/Plugin. Happy assessing. - Jwillbur 22:37, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Event pictograms?

Challenging! Who's gonna make them? LOL. Parutakupiu talk || contribs 01:42, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

I wasn't sure what you were talking about at first, but I think you mean the thing that I just did to the Olympic Header etc. template. I wasn't thinking that they would be for specific events (that's actually very interesting, though) but I was going to try to use the same templates on Olympic sports, because the pictograms look nice there. I was thinking to try to get it to FA list status, so I would need to fix up the lists first. We'll see how my recent changes go, and if they don't work as planned, I'll change it back. Again, in no way was I suggesting that you'd make all those pictograms! Haha.
By the way, what program did you use to make the other ones. If I have a chance (that'll probably be never) I'll take a crack at doing some other ones. Jaredtalk  10:54, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it was on the course of those edits that I posted that message. Of course, I knew you weren't suggesting, it was a joke :P Actually, I came up with that idea when I saw those changes and, even though I could end up being the maker of those hundreds of new pictograms (it's better to keep the design consistency), I wouldn't mind! First, I'd have to do the remaining Winter sports who still don't have one.
My initial idea was to take advantage of the existing sport/discipline pictograms and only add a very specific label on it to relate the image with an event; nothing to much, that would be done instantly. But I'll let this turn into something more serious while I wait for developments. Parutakupiu talk || contribs 16:39, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Changes to Olympic sports

Looks good! However, I think the gray bullet for demo sports is not very distinguishable from the black one. Perhaps if the background color of those table cells was light gray too? I'm not sure. Andrwsc 23:05, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, my problem was that I didn't want to make those cells so that they would stick out. If they did that, it would make them look "special," like they were more important to the other ones. I tried to make the bullets smaller, but that didn't work. Maybe the combination of small and gray? I'm not sure. If you can think of a way that doesn't stick out and looks good, please tell me. I'll look into the background change. Thanks. Jaredtalk  23:07, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Olympics infobox

You forgot to move the pages User:Jared/Olympics infobox/Nations participating and User:Jared/Olympics infobox/Athletes participating to Template:Olympics infobox/Nations participating and Template:Olympics infobox/Nations participating, respectively, or is it intentional? Will you do similar pages for the "Officialy opened by", "Judge's oath", "Athlete's oath" and "Olympic torch" parameters? Parutakupiu talk || contribs 18:53, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Well, I didn't do the Athletes participating one because after making it, I realized that about half the pages had more information on them than the template would include, namely the number of men and women. At the time of creating the template, I wasn't sure whether it would be appropriate or not to include the division, but now I'm iffy. As for the nations thing, I'm not sure. Maybe I just forgot? What do you think I should do as far as the other things/this? Jaredtalk  18:58, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
I think you should go ahead. The infobox is nothing more than a summary and thus should not be restricted by the detail level of a specific info on the article body. As you said, most pages might display more info, but others do not (yet), so you probably should move the template subpage, as is (total of athletes). The other parameters would do nicely, too ;) Parutakupiu talk || contribs 19:27, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use photos of another article - assistance requested

I saw your pictures of action for the Cross country skiing at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Would you be interested in providing the same thing for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 as well? Please advise. Chris 14:52, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

The images would be about the events that occurred during the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo, Japan. This was for cross country skiing, nordic combined, and ski jumping. Its official website is http://www.sapporo2007.com and it is shown both in English and Japanese about Fair use. I have been working with another user and we both agree that it needs more images than the one it has now in order to get it up to GA or FA status. I hope this helps you out on this. If it does not, please advise. Chris 21:55, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Thank you. Chris 00:31, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
As a follow-up to your e-mail, I managed to find a location on where you can get the Sapporo photos. It is called Nordic Focus, a Swiss-based site with its link being http://www.menzpics.ch/info/indexfisevent.html. From what I have seen, registration is required, but they do have great photographs of the athletes involved in this, along with biathlon. I hope this helps. Chris 00:19, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Another possiblity of consideration is http://www.eurosport.com where you can click on the Wintersports section and it should give you access to cross country skiing, nordic combined, and ski jumping. They have sections in there which show both video highlights and still images as well. Hopefully you will have better luck with that than the Swiss site mentioned earlier. Hope this helps. [edit] I do have a proposal

The idea would be to chose a irrational number - say "pi" for example. Every day you move along the number, four digits at a time, until you get a number between 1 and c.1300 - that number is the featured article for tomorrow, which gives everyone time to clean it up

You then make a long list in alphabetical order including all the FAs, like this: 1 Abacus 2 Aborigine 3 Animal ..... 1298 Zulu This could be done with the # symbol. So every day, when new FAs are chosen they are added to the list in the proper place. This would continually shuffle the list, so although you could predict the number for a day months in advance - you could never predict the FA that would be in that position. This makes the process entirely transparent and fair.

That is the whole system. But if people want there can be a process for "override" say for the world cup or something, if a lot of users nominated it. If people are nervous that certain subject are over-represented in the FAs - then there can be a simple rule to precluded articles on the same subject being nominated within say a month of each other - but I don't see that as being necessary.

What do you thing? David Spart (talk · contribs · logs · block user · block log) 13:16, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

That's a great idea. I'm not understanding you fully as far as the pi thing, but everything else makes a lot of sense. I'm glad you allowed for things such as real world events, so that the process is not totally secluded from the rest of the goings-on in WP. It seems very reasonable, but maybe just a few clarifications as far as the random numbers thing. Maybe have a page with the random numbers already generated on it, so that we don't miss numbers, and highlight as we go. I don't know where you would propose this... you can take care of that. Jaredtalk  23:16, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. I agree! The pi thing is simple. Pi goes on forever and is a random string of numbers. An infinate supply of random numbers that is transparent, so we can use that to pick a number between 1 and 1,300. Here are the first 2 million digits of pi: [6] You see? Anyway - I have nevver done this before - but I think I put up a valid proposal here: Wikipedia:SweeTFA proposition. David Spart (talk · contribs · logs · block user · block log) 23:32, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Now, I didn't read your "published" proposal, but what do you plan on doing with articles that have already been chosen recently? Are they taken out of the list or are they up for the ability to be thrown into the mix again just like all the others? That would make it a true random sample, and since the probability of picking the same one twice is minute, this is not a big deal (but as the days go on, the probability of it occurring again is higher...). Overall, though, well thought out. Jaredtalk  23:54, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
An FA that has been TFA is removed from the list. Since there are so many, it is only fair that each one gets one turn max. So when I think about it, about 1/3 of the FA have already been chosen - so the list will only have 800 initial entries. David Spart (talk · contribs · logs · block user · block log) 00:15, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page

See [7]. You are mistaken, this is the 2006 version of the page, with the exception of the featured article that was changed to reflect the current Main Page. We are not going to be repeating year-old jokes. —Centrxtalk • 03:14, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Sorry. I was just referring to the top bar and the On this day sections. I knew that the other ones were place holders. Jaredtalk  03:18, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Having the content there from last year (disregarding the top bar) is confusing people. —Centrxtalk • 03:37, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah. I thought this went over well in the discussion phases, etc, but apparently not. I guess I was a little zealous, especially seeing as how every AFD we say we're going to do this, and we don't. But oh well. There will always be those who are against something, so you have to learn to live with it. If you ask me, I could care less about having something up for AFD. It'd be nice, but I was just trying to do what I thought others wanted. It seems to be the opposite. I appreciated working with you, though! I'm sure I'll talk to you around, sometime! [edit] Community Portal

Sorry about the misinterpretation. I took mainspace as main page. I totally agree with the original posting! Again, sorry about that! (And once again, I do not condone vandalism!) Jaredtalk  03:51, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Okay, thanks for clarifying.  :-) —David Levy 03:53, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, like I said above, I sort of feel like a jerk because I was just trying to do what I thought everyone else wanted, but I was totally off! Anyway, now that this is settled, I never want to talk to you again! :( Jaredtalk  03:57, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 100-Hour Plan

Hello, Jared. I removed some language you added to 100-Hour Plan on March 28 saying that none of the measures of the plan have gotten further than passing the House. I am not sure where your information came from but it is well out of date. H.R. 2 (minimum wage increase) passed the Senate on February 1, and Sen. 4 (implementing 9/11 commission recommendations) passed the Senate on March 13. Andrew Levine 03:00, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

OK, thanks. I was just trying to reword the no-doubt POV language that was already there. I hadn't realized that there were senate actions. Now, since these dates were so long ago, it seems that the president would have had to veto them by now (or they were at least pocketed, right)? Make sure to include, though, that none of the bills has become law yet. Jaredtalk  13:21, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry for my delay in replying! I haven't been on Wikipedia so much recently...and also for some reason my computer doesn't automatically log me in anymore... I'm interested in your idea...although admittedly I don't understand a lot of the abbreviations you wrote down!

I wouldn't claim to be an expert on the details of the bids either...but I can try my best if you wish me to be a part of it. Jamandell (d69) 15:25, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GV Loganathan

Hello Jared. Please check the article page, there are multiple, non-trivial and independent sources available for the article. This page was probably nominated for deletion before the coverage received by the person in question was not satisfactory. A cursory look at he recent newspages dedicated solely to this person, particularly by the Indian media might put your concerns at rest. Best, — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 13:14, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Michael Sneed mess

You're right, this is getting ridiculous, and completely out of hand. That's why I bumped from speedy to AfD; that'll let these folks see from others that it needs to end, and perhaps move on. I doubt it, but one can hope... --Mhking 03:09, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Agreed. The main culprits don't seem to understand that WP is not the place for the conversations they are trying to foment. They keep tilting at windmills. --Mhking 03:29, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey, Jared! Thanks for the addition, they do look great and I might start using them to separate notes from inline citations ;) Parutakupiu talk || contribs 12:52, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I always thought that was pretty cool. I don't know. But thanks. I'm sure there's stuff in that article that could be noted; I took a look through the actual citations but didn't see any other clear "notes" so I didn't make any others. Jaredtalk  16:14, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
You didn't see any because there weren't any on the references section until a user created that note you edited before you ;) All the refs were inline citations. Parutakupiu talk || contribs 16:34, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Eggplant test.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. [edit] Judo at the 2004 Summer Olympics

Hi Jared, a couple of months ago you requested a split of this article into event pages. What do you think of the result? I'd like to use tournament brackets for all the "match sports" for Olympic results, so judo is a good guinea pig for discussion. Thanks, Andrwsc 23:09, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

I'll respond here. I very much like the result. I think it is very consistent with all the other pages of the 2004 Olympics, and is what I think we should strive for as far as all the other pages. Again, good job. It was not something I was planning on doctoring up anytime soon! The brackets, I've found, work well, as long as the group size is reasonable. Jaredt  23:16, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. The only thing I'm a little bit hesitant about is that I could not use the full name of each athlete because the bracket would be too wide. I'm looking to do Taekwondo at the 2004 Summer Olympics next, and fortunately that sport only has 16 entrants per event, so the brackets are one level less. Andrwsc 00:17, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Biathlon

It should be possible to include the data using a spreadsheet - it looks a bit better now. I'd rather have people's times than the difference, though, because it was an individual race and what was recorded was the time, not the difference behind. Don't have too many feelings either way though. Sam Vimes | Address me 11:48, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Will Shade.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Will Shade.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 13:21, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
