Jared Benjamin High (September 23, 1985 – September 29, 1998) was a victim of depression and bullying in Washington state[1]. Jared was attacked by a bully at McLoughlin Middle School on May 6, 1998 leaving him with extensive injuries which required intensive medical treatment. Both the bully and Jared ended up being suspended for 3 days. Suspension, and a deep depression caused by physical and mental pain resulted in Jared taking his own life. Jared was only 13 years old at the time of his death, which publicly raised much awareness to the danger of bullying and its effects.
[edit] Brenda High vs. Pasco School District
Brenda High, Jared's mother, filed a lawsuit against the Pasco School District for "the defendant District (school district) and defendants S. and H. (bully's parents) were negligent in their supervision and discipline of Andrew S., (bully) and that the District negligently investigated the assault and wrongfully punished equally the perpetrator and the victim."[2]
The trial ended with a settlement awarded to Brenda High for the amount of $140,000 USD, one third of which went toward the lawsuit expenses.[3]
