[edit] Discussion elsewhere
Since it's getting quite widespread now, I've started a discussion about the use of this template over at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)#Template:Japanese name. - Ben Ram 10:21, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] When to use
The other discussion seems incomplete.
When should this template be used?
From my perspective, it should only be used when a non-Western ordering is used predominantly in the article. If the article begins with a Western ordering, it should be already clear which is the family name.--ZayZayEM (talk) 01:44, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
