- 1909 - The Ryōgoku Kokugikan sumō stadium opens in Tokyo. Constructed at a cost of 270,000 yen, the stadium holds 13,000 spectators.
- 1968 - An American F4 Phantom II crashes on the campus of Kyūshū University.
- 1973 - Wajima Hiroshi becomes the first sumō wrestler to enter the sport through a university club (rather than the more traditional training stable) and make the rank of Yokozuna.
- 1995 - Hideo Nomo becomes the first Japanese pitcher in 30 years to win a Major League Baseball game.
