- 1903 - Taki Rentarō, one of Japan's most famous composers, dies at the age of 23.
- 1928 - The law for the maintenance of national security is passed, abolishing personal ownership of assets and prohibiting political associations.
- 1946 - Baseball betting begins at Kōrakuen Stadium.
- 1966 - The Beatles arrive in Japan for the first time.
- 1969 - 7,000 people participate in an antiwar folk gathering at the west exit of Shinjuku Station. Many are arrested.
- 1990 - Ayanomiya Fumihito (Emperor Showa's second eldest son) marries Kawashima Kiko and becomes Prince Akishino.
- 1994 - Murayama Tomiichi becomes the first Socialist Party prime minister in 47 years.
