- 1906 - The first transpacific cable is laid between Japan and the United States.
- 1914 - Mitsubishi Building 21 in Marunouchi becomes the first office building in Japan with elevator service.
- 1966 - Japan's first orienteering is held at Mount Takao. It was referred to as a "Walking Rally."
- 1968 - The Ogasawara Islands are returned to Japan after 23 years of occupation by the United States. It becomes part of the city of Tokyo.
- 1974 - The National Land Agency (国土庁?) is created.
- 1983 - Proportional representation is implemented for upper house elections.
- 1984 - The perpetrator of the Glico Morinaga case, or the "man of 20 faces," announces the end of his attempts to extort money from various food companies.
