- 1884 - Yakuza boss Shimizu Jirochō is sentenced to seven years in prison for gambling.
- 1890 - The Lake Biwa Canal,from Ōtsu to Kamo River, is completed.
- 1945 - The Japanese battleship Yamato is sunk by U.S. forces while on its way to Okinawa.
- 1947 - The Labor Standards Law is passed. It is implemented on September 1.
- 1991 - The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) holds its annual meeting in Nagoya, its first annual meeting to be held in Asia.
