[edit] 2008 Changes
The 2008 edition of the Japan Cup Dirt will be run at Hanshin Racecourse at a distance of 1,800 meters (about 9 furlongs). It will also be run one week after the Japan Cup turf race, instead of the day before.
The Japan Cup Dirt had been overshadowed by its turf counterpart in recent years, because turf racing in Japan typically remains more popular and attracts better horses. Attendance for the 2007 Japan Cup Dirt was 56,052, while the attendance for the turf race the following day was 103,545.[1]
The move to Hanshin Racecourse will also mark the second time that the Japan Cup Dirt is run in a clockwise, or right-handed, direction. It was previously run once at Nakayama Racecourse, another clockwise circuit.
