January 26: Australia Day in Australia (1788); Republic Day in India (1950) 1500 – Spanish navigator, explorer, and conquistador Vicente Yáñez Pinzón reached the north coast of what today is Brazil. 1788 – The British First Fleet, led by Captain Arthur Phillip (pictured), landed at Sydney Cove, establishing the first permanent European settlement in Australia. 1905 – The Cullinan Diamond, the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found, was discovered at the Premier Mine in Cullinan, Gauteng, South Africa. 1950 – Indian independence movement: India officially became a republic under a new constitution, with Rajendra Prasad as its first president. 1983 – The spreadsheet program Lotus 1-2-3, the IBM Personal Computer's first "killer application", was first released. Who decides who is notable here? I added someone whose influence is quite widespread and is well-noted in education circles, even if not by the person who removed this.

The best way to show that someone is notable is to provide a source. If the person is notable enough to qualify for inclusion in an encyclopaedia, they will have been written about in a number of places - reputed sources, not personal blogs or school newsletters. I reverted this one because a web search for the name as you entered it failed to turn up a single hit. A wider search under first and last names only turned up one reference to a high-school counselor and someone at Ohio State, all incidental mentions. If there are articles or publications out there, web or otherwise, that show I'm wrong, I'm more than happy to stand corrected. Pipnosis 19:55, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Removed Polycarp from list of saints--according that page, his feast is 23 February. RCanine 20:31, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
