[edit] Oceanic news

In response to Gadfium's query in his edit summary - "Do we include Pacific Island news here?" - I would have to say yes, so long as its relevant to ANZers. News about the stability of Fiji (or lack thereof) is important to us. Similarly, I added news about the death of Francis Ona because of its significance. I don't think generic Pacific Island news should be posted here. Perhaps one day, when it could be viable, this page could be moved to Current events in Oceania. --Cyberjunkie | Talk 06:10, 31 July 2005 (UTC)

Fair enough. I think we should probably include very major events such as election results as well, but the normal weekly/monthly news of Pacific Islands isn't sufficiently important to our readership, even though we may report equivalent events (strikes for example) in Australia and New Zealand.gadfium 06:42, 31 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Last night, or this morning

IOW, was the Waitangi treaty house rammed on Boxing Day night, or the early morning of today which is the 27th (local time)? Can't find a time anywhere. Moriori 19:50, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

TVNZ says this morning [1]. Google news says police were called about 2:40 am but I'm not sure which report that's quoting.-gadfium 21:38, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Oceanic news, revisited

Now that Portal:Oceania is running, we need to decide what to do with the news stories covered by its ITN section. Because the portal covers 28 states and territories, there will potentially be a lot of stories. If we cover just one story per state per month on average, that's about a story a day.

Does this Current events article want our stories, in which case should it be renamed to something more inclusive? Our alternatives are to set up a separate Current events in Oceania set of monthly pages, or to rely on a 2006 in Oceania page similar to 2006 in Australia. We'll also start to feed events into the main Current events page more.

Comments are requested. I'd like to be able to decide fairly quickly whether we need to set up a Current events in Oceania page.-gadfium 00:13, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Given the lack of response, I went with use of 2006 in Oceania.-gadfium 03:25, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Current events in Oceania

What happened, how come this was moved? Brian | (Talk) 01:12, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

The reason given in the edit summary by User:Joturner was 'to be more inclusive' [2]. -- Longhair 01:25, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

I think User:Joturner was being bold. I've argued for inclusion of Oceanic news since this page was set up. See above. My last proposal met with no response, and I decided to be conservative and not include Oceania events.

At the beginning of the month, Joturner suggested all "current events in ..." pages be merged into larger regions, and a discussion ensued at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Current_events#Sub-Article_Merges. I argued that this page was sufficiently frequently updated to survive, and suggested again that Oceanic news could be added to it. No argued against that point of view.

I've waited most of a day since the renaming to see if there would be cries of protest before I started updating links from the portal pages to here.-gadfium 01:35, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

No objection from me, I was just 'shocked' to see it renamed Brian | (Talk) 02:03, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] News source for Oceania (Aust & NZ)

Hello Current Events Australia and New Zealand (now Current events in Oceania) editors.

In my work, I help to produce the Austral Peace and Security Network report (APSNet), a bi-weekly roundup of security news for Australia and the surrounding area. You might find it a useful source for the occasional post to Current Events in Australia and New Zealand.

There is an archive of 2006 APSNet issues, and a page for free e-mail subscription, if you think that it would be useful.

My apologies in advance if you feel that this is inappropriate in any way. Thanks to user:Gadfium for pointing out the best way to do this. -- Jonathan O'Donnell 07:03, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Currency?

I have just removed *Big Brother sexual assault controversy The show has been over for weeks. If a "current events" article isn't going to be current, then it shouldn't be here. If it is going to list "ongoing current events" then they had better be ongoing or it makes the site look poorly maintained (which it isn't - but currency is the hardest thing to keep up with). --Garrie 23:07, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Archival

The page needs to be switched over to the new month. Can someone please take care of the archiving?--cj | talk 16:27, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Merger of regional pages into Portal:Current events

This proposal was discussed about May 2006, and most editors opposed the idea. However, participation in this page has dropped since then, and most other regional current events pages are moribund. Please see the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Current_events#Sub-Article_Merges.-gadfium 05:53, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

I guess this page is moribund too.-gadfium 08:15, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
