• 1948 – Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Railroad debut a new lightweight passenger car consist for the Golden State passenger train between Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California.
• 1961 – Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke delivers the first electric locomotives built in the German Democratic Republic to Deutsche Reichsbahn.
• 1987 – Amtrak and Conrail trains collide in Maryland.
• 2000 – The Åsta accident, a northbound BM92 multiple unit and a southbound passenger train headed by a Di 3 locomotive collides on Norway's Rørosbanen line near Åsta station, killing 19 people.
