- 1863 – The first section of the London Underground Railway opens (Paddington to Farringdon Street).
- 1864 – The Illinois Central, Columbus and Indianapolis and Richmond and Covington railroads sign an agreement for joint operation as the Great Central Line between Columbus, Ohio, and Indianapolis, Indiana, headed by the Indiana Central Railway.
- 1865 – The California Pacific Railroad absorbs the Sacramento and San Francisco Rail Road Company and the San Francisco and Marysville Rail Road Company.
- 1883 – The Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central Railway enters bankruptcy and is sold at foreclosure.

- 1977 – Passenger service on Boston and Maine Railroad's Lexington Branch ends when a train consisting of a Budd Rail Diesel Car and a switcher locomotive are stranded by a snowstorm at the Bedford, Massachusetts, depot.[1]
