Janet Goliger is an American educator, self-defense instructor, and author. Goliger is a physical education teacher in the Glendale Unified School District in La Crescenta, California, and is a second-degree black belt in Okinawan Shōrin-ryū Shidōkan Karate and a member of the North American Beikoku Shido-kan Karate-do Association. She also holds an additional second-degree black belt in Shorin-Ryu Kobayashi Karate and a green belt in Seki-Ryu Jujutsu. In 1999 Goliger combined her teaching and martial arts skills to create the C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense Program to educate her students how to fight back with simple verbal and physical self-defense techniques.[1]

Goliger's C.L.A.S.S. Teacher's Manual and Instructional DVD is used by teachers across the country.[citation needed] Since its start in 1999, the C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense program has been credited with saving several children's lives.[citation needed] Goliger is the creator and sole owner of the C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense program and has written all the instructional and information materials used by the program.

Goliger wrote and self-published I Need to be SAFE: I'm Worth It!-How to Protect Your Child from Danger (2006), an approach to self-defense that gives children safety tools they need to recognize danger before something happens and the ability to flee if attacked by surprise. The book shows parents how to work with their child using techniques to sharpen awareness skills and is illustrated with step-by-step photos and captions for each of the 32 self-defense techniques.

Goliger has been teaching physical education since 1978. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and a Master of Science degree in physical education and kinesiology from Florida International University. She is the author of two articles in the Association of Professional Directors' Journal of Health and Physical Education. In June 2003, Goliger was voted "Teacher Of The Year" at La Crescenta Elementary School.
