Andrewartha is a graduate of the National Theatre Drama School.[1] She first came to prominence when she played the role of scheming Reb Kean in the popular Australian series Prisoner. Kean was a lead character on the soap for twelve months spanning the 1984 season, with a brief return appearance in late 1985.

Andrewartha is perhaps best known for playing Lyn Scully in another popular Australian series, Neighbours, a role she played from 1999. She was known in this role for her bogan type character and her ditzy nature, unlike many other characters she had played previously. She announced her departure from the show in August and her final appearance was shown on December 12, 2006.

In January 2008, Janet revealed at a Neighbours Night that she was returning to Neighbours. She returned to Neighbours on May 21, 2008.

Andrewartha initially appeared alongside Anne Charleston who had previously played her mother Deidre Kean in Prisoner. She has also worked in the Australian police procedural Blue Heelers as Det. Bridget Ryan, A Country Practice as Lisa Davis and in the telemovie Moby-Dick.

She has also been injured in a car accident[citation needed] and went to acting school with fellow cast mate Jackie Woodburne.

Since her departure from Neighbours Andrewartha has worked in London and with the Melbourne Theatre Company, of which she is an ensemble member, in the play All My Sons alongside John Stanton. She has appeared in many other plays including:
