Jane's Information Group

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jane's Information Group (often referred to as Jane's) was founded by Fred T. Jane in 1898. Jane began by sketching ships as an enthusiast, and this gradually developed into an encyclopedic knowledge, culminating in the publishing of All the World's Fighting Ships. The company Jane founded gradually branched out into other arenas of military expertise. The books and trade magazines published by Jane's are often considered the de facto public source of information on warfare and transportation systems.

Jane's Information Group, based in London, is now owned by IHS [1] (Information Handling Services) having previously been owned by the Woodbridge Company, and previously owned by the Thomson Corporation for a number of years. Woodbridge is a private equity firm holding 70% of Thomson's stock.

Major competitors include Defense News, Flight International and Aviation Week.

Jane's continues to provide open source intelligence in the defense, security, transport and law enforcement sectors.
