Jan Sapp is professor of biology and history at York University, Canada. He is best known for his writing on the coral reef crisis, focusing in detail on the outbreaks of crown of thorns starfish and coral bleaching. But he is primarily an historian of evolutionary biology, with a particular interest on microbial phylogeny, symbiosis, and cytoplasmic inheritance.

He was the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in the History of the Biological Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montréal from 2001-2003.
