Jan Budtz (born 20 April 1979) is a Danish football player, who plays as a goalkeeper. He currently plays for English club Hartlepool United, having left English club Doncaster Rovers. He is the twin brother of fellow Danish football player Ole Budtz.

[edit] Biography

Jan became an instant hero in his first game for Doncaster Rovers when he replaced the injured Andy Warrington during the Carling Cup match with Manchester City in September 2005. One of his first actions was to pull off a magnificent last minute save to deny Darius Vassell a 25 yard strike, by tipping the ball round the post. When the match finally went to penalties, Jan saved two of the three taken by Manchester City (the first penalty, by Darius Vassell, hitting the crossbar). Doncaster won the shootout 3-0 with Jan's name being plastered all over local and national newspapers the following day. He also made several appearances on local TV news channels.[1]

Following his day of glory, he largely failed to progress from this. Although he enjoyed a good run in the first team in the 2005/2006 season, he was increasingly side-lined in the spring 2006. Budtz fractured a bone in his hand in January 2006,[2] and Doncaster Rovers quickly signed replacement Alan Blayney from Southampton F.C. for £50,000.[3]

By the beginning of the 2006-07 season, he was down to 3rd choice behind Benjamin Smith and Alan Blayney. Budtz signed an emergency loan deal from Doncaster Rovers to Wolverhampton Wanderers. He eventually signed a six week extension with Wolverhampton, and made his debut on the 17th March against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough Stadium, the game ending 2-2. He was recalled by Doncaster Rovers on 24 April, following goalkeeper Neil Sullivan's return from Doncaster to Leeds United. Budtz was signed by Hartlepool United on 29 June 2007. At his current club, he has a reputation of being very inconsistent, an example of this being his poor performance in a 3-2 Port Vale in a recent game. He missed several easy clearences, nearly costing his team.
