[edit] Thanks for the offer

But I don't tend to use userboxes. Looks nice though! - Francis Tyers · 08:29, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] UEA userbox

Thanks for the note about the UEA userbox. Just to let you know, I don't think fair use images are allowed in userboxes. Edward 09:56, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Image:Uea logo2.gif is tagged with {{logo}}, which says the image is used as "fair use". Only free images can be used in the user namespace. For the crest to be free it would have to be released public domain, or under a license like the GFDL or Creative Commons. Edward 10:04, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] {{User uea}}

Thanks for the heads-up. It might be worth contacting the Vice-Chancellor's department about getting the two logos (the UEA logo and the coat of arms) released on a CC licence for use on here; it's not that difficult to do and there's a form letter kicking around somewhere, prolly linked from Wikipedia:Fair use.

I've made a couple of tweaks to the template:

  1. I closed the DIV you opened on the first line, so it didn't screw with the layout of my user page; and
  2. I added the category directly to the userbox.

Thanks again :o)

PS: Personally, I'd prefer the UEA logo on there… — OwenBlacker 10:41, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Random greeting

Well if you have edited Ardingly and Ardingly College then I'm pretty sure that you know my dad, and thus me. I have to say your userpage is less of a giveaway... Do you have a surname? I do like "out of the blue" greetings - although I thought Facebook was the only place that happened. Why the participation in WP Oxford? Anyhow, hello, good guess, and have a nice Tuesday! Cricketgirl 12:56, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Surname sounds vaguely familiar... No, my father's not teaching at Ardingly any more - my family moved to Germany in July 2005. I'll pass on the message though! Cricketgirl 14:34, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi James. Thanks for your message and words of support. I am really happy that so many things are still accessible to me as a blind person, particularly compared to even a few years ago. You seem like a great contributor also. Academic Challenger 00:10, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] About your edit at KCL article

Today you edited or deleted few stuff in KCL article. Could you please explain why did you delete those stuff? In case you feel doubt about any un-cited information, you may ask for a reference. Moreover, you did some major edit without an edit summery. Hope in future you will use it. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 19:04, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. You are absolutely right about the trivia section. Last year I nominated KCL article as GA nominee but it failed and one of the main reasons was Trivia. Anyway, I found you are from KCL and I am sure you can improve this article with proper images and citations. Just one request, try to explain your edit through edit summery. Otherwise someone may re-edit them (already happed, see KCL page). In addition, please sign your name with four tilde symbol (~). It will automatically generate your signature and date including time as well. Cheers. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 12:36, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] King's College London as a British University

Yesterday you edited KCL article and replace it's title as a University. It may create a debate regarding KCL's status as a university. Last year I tried to do the same and faced huge arguments from different wikipedians. You may visit this link to see the debate - Click. Well, still I am sticking on my old point and believe that KCL is a university on its own right. If Imperial can claim them as a university then why not King's? I am carefully observing that no one have raised any point on this issue this time, but still this edit is on the risk. Could you please collect some third party references/citations either from any magazine or Uni of London page supporting KCL's status as a university? It will help us to face upcoming debate regarding this issue. Cheers. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 15:53, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] King's College London

Hi, you just removed the notable information that the trio of extremely influential geographers, Stamp, Wooldrich and Linton (who collaborated with each other and are therefore closely associated) were King's alumni, with the cryptic edit summary "fix tags". Would you care to elucidate? Pterre (talk) 13:31, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello? In the absence of a reply I'm left with the impression that you meant "I don't care about geography so I'll just delete the information and references and disguise it as a typo fix". If you meant "King's has loads of alumni more famous than these" it should be discussed, not just deleted. It is my contention that the well documented fact that three of the most influential British geographers of the 20th century studied at King's within a short period, knew and influenced each other, is noteworthy - certainly more notable than Reginald McKenna (whohe? - Ed.). Professor Stamp for example, besides being professor at LSE and a leading light on numerous committees, wrote lots of popular books, and was knighted. Professor Wooldridge and Professor Linton were hugely influential on geomorphology; Wooldridge was a CBE and an FRS and Linton has a BSG award named in his honour. Pterre (talk) 19:18, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

OK, now I'm starting to get seriously peeved with you. You have not had the common courtesy to reply, explain or undo your deceitfully disguised vandalism in over a month, and now you are doing the same to List of King's College London alumni‎. If you have a problem with geography and geology as academic subjects worthy of your consideration that is you problem. Please desist from destructive editing of Wikipedia. Pterre (talk) 18:01, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi James, thanks for your response and expanation, and I'm sorry if my message was a bit intemperate - felt I was banging my head on a wall. As regards references, simply removing information is not really constructive - you could have followed the links and added references from the articles, moved the information to the talk page, or as I did, moved it to the largely unreferenced 'Alumni' article; it is hardly controversial that this trio studied geology at King's. I'm not quite clear why you feel geology is too narrow a heading - I added it as a sub-heading under the main heading of Science, Technology etc. I would agree with you if I had added say Stamp as "Regional Geography", or Wooldridge and Linton as "Geomorphology", but in what sense is the scientific study of the history of the earth over the past 4.6 billion years any narrower than any other discipline, eg Computer Science (a branch of applied mathematics)? A narrow field would be "Invertebrate Palaeontology", "Igneous Petrology", or any of a few dozen other branches of geology. I would not have a problem with it being widened to 'earth sciences etc' or something similar, if you know of any suitably notable additions, but this loses the information that these men studied geology at King's. I re-emphasise that these three are not just 'any old geologists who studied at King's': they collaborated, were known internationally and became hugely influential in other fields, one being knighted and another being the last geographer for 50 years to become an FRS. Stamp single-handedly and successfully organised and directed the only complete land use survey of Great Britain ever (before or since). Pterre (talk) 11:22, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Your RFA

Hi. I have removed your note from the page because it was not correctly formatted and had no chance of success. As Wikipedia has grown the standards required of potential admins have unfortunately grown as well and it is now very unusual for any editor without many many thousands of edits to become an admin. Requests for adminiship need to be made in the correct format. You may find reading the guide to RFA useful. I hope that you are not discouraged by this and do not see it as a setback. Despite what people say, adminship is a big deal and most editors have relatively high standards for potential candidated to measure up against. This is no reflection on you but simply the reality of the way the project works. Please do continue to contribute to the project and I hope that we will be seeing you again at RFA. [edit] W. F. G. Swann

Hi. A while back you'd added an additional undergraduate institution (City Guilds of London Institute) to William Francis Gray Swann's biography, and you deleted his (1905) date of graduation. I wasn't quite sure why you made those changes. The reference I'd given (American Philosophical Society biography) hadn't mentioned the City Guilds of London Institute. Can we straighten this out? Thanks - Easchiff(talk) 10:56, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, and for the repair job on the article. Is there a reference somewhere to Swann's time at King's College? The American Philosophical Society bio referenced in the article seems quite complete, but doesn't mention it. Nor could I find it in a google search. Cheers! Easchiff(talk) 01:52, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Robin McLaren

A tag has been placed on Robin McLaren, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Ziggy Sawdust 19:31, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
