[edit] Welcome

Hello Jamesgibbon, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! [edit] Hello

Welcome. If you wish, you can also cast a vote here [[1]]. I recently added a link to the daughter article on the subject matter, but otherwise it remains as version 1 with a new link.--MONGO 07:37, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Qatar

Thanks for your answer at WP:RD about Qatar. I am grateful. PedanticallySpeaking July 8, 2005 20:46 (UTC)

[edit] Anti-Semitism in Poland

Hello, James. I've reverted the article to a more NPOV version by Piotrus. Someone has been reverting it to a very POV verison so as to increase the number of delete votes. Feel free to take a second look. Thanks. HKT 22:17, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] You are a sockpuppet

Of me.

According to Melissadolbeer. See Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Melissadolbeer where this accusation is made. ~~~~ 09:00, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

Forgive me if this isn't the right place for this; I have no experience of this process. I have no wish to be involved in this dispute; I only wish to point out, that contrary to the suggestion above, I am certainly NOT a sockpuppet; I'm an individual Wikipedian living in Derby, England. I have a website at jamesgibbon.com. I can be contacted by telephone by an admin if necessary. I've added a similar comment to WP:RFAR. jamesgibbon 13:25, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
You should remove your comments or correct your RfC contribution by moving them up to the list of endorsing signatures under the outside view. You only sign the ouside view if you want to endose the comment by Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) where he notes that the RfC is improper and that it concerns an article in which no action has been taken to resolve a dispute. This is how you can help the RfC process: "If necessary, educate users by referring to the appropriate Wikipedia policies." --AI 10:18, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Arbitration

Melissadolbeer has opened a request for arbitration against you (at WP:RFAR). ~~~~ 09:27, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] consensus

The Authentic Matthew VFD has closed. The results were

  • Delete - 21 (58%)
  • Keep - 11 (31%)
  • Merge - 4 (11%)

This was declared to have been no consensus, and therefore a new VFD has been opened at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Authentic Matthew (consensus).

Would you be prepared to re-add your vote there? ~~~~ ( ! | ? | * ) 09:41, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Authentic Matthew the sequel

The POV that was in Authentic Matthew, an article you voted to delete, before it was NPOVed has been re-created at a new article - see Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/The Original Gospel of Matthew. ~~~~ ( ! | ? | * ) 20:17, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Gender roles in Islam

Regarding your suggestion, I have been trying to work with this, I mean compare what the opening paragraph was like when I began work on it. Note too how Lao Wai constantly removes my request for citations, and constantly includes the allusion that all women of Medina were all Ansari (Helpers of Muhamad) - That is obviously untrue, but he keeps adding it anyway. [2], [3], [4]. Note also how The Source he uses to justify his assertion "Obviously this is a vision of Heaven that is more likely to appeal to men. Eternally virgin dark-eyed Houris are unlikely to appeal to many women" says nothing of the sort, in fact is says almost the opposite ("The life of women in Jannah will be as pleasant and happy as the life of men. Allah is not partial to any gender. He created both of them and He will take care of both of them according to their needs and desires. Let us all work to achieve the Jannah and then, in sha’ Allah, we will find there what will satisfy all of us fully."). Anyway, besides that, anything of any merit is already dealt with in Women in Islam, a more stable and more Accurate and more NPOV piece.

[edit] Doire/Derry/Londonderry

James - if you look later in Talk:Derry, you will see that this one has been debated to death. There is no right solution. So the consensus reached, as being equally intolerable to both sides and favouring neither, is that the City is Derry and the County is Londonderry. See also Derry/Londonderry naming dispute. --Red King 23:56, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Through_The_Keyhole.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Through_The_Keyhole.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --Adnghiem501 06:31, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Military hanging

Dear James,

I'm hoping to add a section on military hangings, but there's some sort of edit war going on at hanging, apparently related to Singapore's recent execution of Van Nguyen, and I thought I'd let it die down.

My understanding (not certain knowledge) is that hanging can't be used in the U.K. military any more. (I think Tony Blair got rid of the residual death penalty in 1999.) It certainly isn't in Australia. It is still available as a punishment in the U.S. military, where the reather unpleasant "standard-drop" method has traditionally been used (and I don't think they offer lethal injection).

On a side note, one of the more memorable literary/cinematographic hangings I remember is the WWII military hanging of a U.S. soldier in the U.K. in The Dirty Dozen. I seem to recall that they used the "long drop".

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Canarywharfview.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Canarywharfview.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 18:43, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

If you have created this image then add simply {{GFDL-self}} to the image page and remove no source tag. It will escape the image from further deletion tag provided you have created the image.

[edit] Image:Lawro.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Lawro.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 14:59, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I'm TechnoFaye and I'm writing this because the perfectly good image of Mark Lawrenson you uploaded was marked for deletion by Abu Bidali. You should know that he does this because he thinks it's funny; he even says so on his user page. More then 20 other editors just like us are parties to several formal complaints to Wikipedia in an effort to have him banned permanently for doing just what he did to you. Others have described him on the record as a "hoodlum" and a "vandal". My testimony was that "Bidali would be just as happy breaking antennas off cars at night". After he is gone, we can repair the damage he has done to WP. If you haven't already, please consider adding your name to the lists at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Abu_badali#Users_Who_Endorse_This_Summary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Abu_badali#Users_who_endorse_this_summary:_2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Abu_badali#Users_who_endorse_this_summary:_4 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Abu_badali#Other_users_who_endorse_this_summary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Abu_badali#Users_who_endorse_this_summary

[edit] Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Abu badali

Hello,

An Arbitration case involving Abu badali has been opened: Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Abu badali. You have expressed an interest in this before, so please add any evidence you may wish the arbitrators to consider to the evidence sub-page, Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Abu badali/Evidence. You may also contribute to the case on the workshop sub-page, Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Abu badali/Workshop.

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Dandyinaspiccover.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Dandyinaspiccover.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rlest 11:44, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Dandyinaspiccover.jpg

I have tagged Image:Dandyinaspiccover.jpg as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Thank you. Rlest 11:51, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Dandyinaspiccover.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Dandyinaspiccover.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 12:09, 20 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rlest 12:09, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your own Photos

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! There is however another Wikimedia foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please consider creating an account and uploading media there instead. That way, all the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons. Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Thanks again, and please continue uploading!

[edit] Flood

Hi James. Noticed your changed the disambiguation entry for the film Flood. Unsure if you noticed, but there was already a stub created for this film here, and would have been best to expand this. Also, my understanding is that the year of a film is only entered if there is more than one film with the same name. The two articles will need to be merged, and as you are showing more of an interest than me I am happy to leave you in charge of this should you require. --Raerth 21:55, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent contribution removed content from Flood (2006 film). Please be more careful when editing pages and do not remove content from Wikipedia without a good reason, which should be specified in the edit summary. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you would like to experiment again, please use the sandbox. Thank you. [edit] Fair use disputed for Image:Dandyinaspiccover2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Dandyinaspiccover2.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:28, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
