James gained a BA (Hons) in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Hull, and later gained an MA in Theatre Directing at St Mary’s University. While at University James was the Artistic Director of the theatre company Midnight Productions and directed a wide selection of productions for the company, culminating in a new musical, Jack, which was written by James himself and based on the story of Jack the Ripper.
