[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Robert Rankin - Knees Up Mother Earth.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Robert Rankin - Knees Up Mother Earth.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 03:29, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- The rationale for use of the image is already included in the license tag. The image is being used to illustrate an article discussing the book in question, which the license tag says is believed to qualify as fair use. The article for the associated book is the only one making use of the image. What additional rationale are you asking for? --James 08:11, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

- Our rules on non-free content require a specific rationale for each use. If the image is being used for nothing but illustration on the article, this is considered a decorative use which is explicitly not allowed by our policies. For a fair-use image to stay, it must itself be the subject of critical commentary - for example, is there any significance to the way the cover was designed? If you can't think of any specific justification for this article to have this image, it doesn't belong here. The template you used is pretty clear that you do need an additional justification beyond that in the box. Hope this helps - let me know if you have any other questions about this policy. - The page about fair use rationales says nothing about the image itself needing to be the subject of critical commentary. The Wikipedia:Fair_use_rationale_guideline page even lists being used to illustrate a particular topic as one of the purposes a fair use image might have. I've added a fair use rationale, but I find the way you are going about this to be quite anti-social. While it only takes you a minute to tag an image, it creates a lot more work for the other user. Why not put your effort into adding fair use rationales in the cases where it is obviously fair use (like a book cover being used solely in the article about the book). --James 14:45, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
