James Parkes, maverick Anglican clergyman and lifelong fighter against Christian missionizing of Jews, Christian antisemitism, and Nazism, was born on the Island of Guernsey in 1896. He published 24 books and hundreds of articles, the great majority dealing with Christian-Jewish relations, and was a founder of the Council of Christians and Jews. His magnum opus, "The Conflict Between the Church and the Synagogue," appeared in 1934. Before he died England in 1981, he established the Parkes Institute of Jewish Studies at the University of Southampton.
