Jamie Ward (born May 12, 1986) is a professional footballer, currently playing as a midfielder or forward for Chesterfield. He was born in Birmingham, but qualifies to play for Northern Ireland through his grandfather. He made two appearances for the Northern Ireland under-18 side and in September 2006 was an unused substitute for the Under-21 team in their game against Germany.
Ward began his career as a trainee with Aston Villa, playing in the 2004 FA Youth Cup Final defeat against Middlesbrough. He turned professional in July 2005 after recovering from injuries received in a car crash in 2004.
He joined Stockport County on loan in March 2006 until the end of the season[1], making his league debut in a 1-0 victory away to Bury on the 7th of March. He made 9 appearances, scoring once in a 3-1 home victory against Shrewsbury Town.
At end of the 2005-06 season, Ward was released by Villa. On July 6, 2006 he signed a 3-year contract with Ian Atkins' Torquay United, despite interest from Stockport County and Wrexham [2]. However, with a change of ownership and manager at Torquay, Ward asked for a transfer in December 2006 and joined Chesterfield, managed by former Torquay manaager Roy McFarland, on January 31, 2007[3].
Despite impressing in his first few games for Chesterfield at the end of the 2006 - 07 season. He got injured for six weeks which dashed any hopes of Chesterfield staying up.
He started the 2007/08 season brightly but in only his second game against Sheffield Utd, he again pulled his hamstring. Jamie fought back to match fitness and scored 12 goals (including the goal of the season against Shrewsbury Town) in the Spireites 2007/08 season.
