James W. Owens is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caterpillar Inc., the world's largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines. He has held the posts since 1 February 2004.
Mr. Owens served as vice chairman from December 2003 to February 2004; during the prior eight years as a group president, Mr. Owens was at various times responsible for 13 of the company's 25 divisions. Mr. Owens joined Caterpillar in 1972 after earning Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees at North Carolina State University.
Other directorships held by Owens include Alcoa, FM Global Insurance Company, International Business Machines, and the Institute for International Economics.
