Turner, began playing Australian Rules Football at the age of ten, when he played for a small local team. He went to Tatachilla Lutheran College, where he became one of the most predominant players on the school team, being chosen for captain 3 years in a row. In one memorable game he kicked 6 goals playing centre against the strong Victor Harbour side. His skills on the field helped propel him to South Adelaide Football Club, in the SANFL. Here Turner honed his skills, until he entered the 2007 AFL Draft at the age of 18. Turner was selected by the Adelaide Crows, for their rookie list.
