[edit] Character History
James Sutherland was the biological father of Christian and Gina's baby Wilber. Wilber was first thought to be Christian's biological child, but upon his birth it became obvious that this was not the case as the baby was clearly African-American. When Christian later tried to sue Gina for full custody of Wilber, Gina contacted James, who lived in Arizona, to help her case to keep Wilber. James claimed that he could not explain to his wife that he had had a one-night stand with a woman and had gotten her pregnant, and initially supported Gina's case. However, he soon discovered a diary chronicling Gina's sexual history, indicating that she had had 292 partners in the past three years. Realizing Gina was unfit as a mother, James decided to help Christian in his case for custody. But after spending time with Wilber, James began to have a change of heart and decides to keep his baby for himself, confessing the situation to his wife so she could help him win custody from Gina. The Sutherlands are successful not only in getting sole custody, but also denying both Gina and Christian any visitation until Wilber becomes a legal adult. James decides to rename Wilber "Gabriel," and the Sutherlands return to Arizona.
Several months later, Christian contacts James to inform him that Gina is HIV positive and James and Gabriel would need to be tested for the virus as well. James flies back to Miami to have Christian conduct the test on him and the baby, and both come out negative. James encourages a bitter Christian to try to see the good in Gina, as James has learned to put aside his hatred of her just enough to thank her for bringing Gabriel into his life.
In season 4, James's adult son, Wendell, visits Christian and informs him that James and his wife were killed in a car accident on their way home from church. Per James's will, custody of Wilber--who never responded to his second name of Gabriel--was to go back to Christian, with Gina having as little contact with the boy as possible.
